Kingdom Interviews: Donté Greene
http://blogcritics.org/sports/article/kingdom-interviews-dont-greene/
Following Wednesday's practice, Sacramento Kings guard/forward Donté Greene
took time out of his schedule to talk about the task of defending the game’s
biggest stars, his incredible shoe collection, and rookie pranks. The
second-year pro out of Syracuse is averaging 8.3 points and 2.8 rebounds per
game while starting 25 of the team's last 33 games. An exceptional two-way
player, he scored a career high 24 points twice this season while recording
countless highlight-reel dunks and blocked shots. Be sure to catch Donté and
the Kings in action when they take on the Utah Jazz tonight at 6 p.m. PST.
Who were your idols growing up and which current or former players did you
pattern your game after?
When I first started playing, T-Mac (Tracy McGrady) and Vince Carter were
definitely my favorite players. As I started to get older and learned the
strengths of my game, Rashard Lewis was one guy who I looked up to.
Can you take me through a typical gameday? Do you have any pre-game
routines?
Usually we have shootaround at about 10:30, so I get up around 9 or 9:30 and
go get something to eat. I head to the gym to get a few shots in before
shootaround and go watch film. Then I go home, take a nap for about an hour
or an hour and a half — I make sure I eat before I nap and eat when I get
up. I usually get one of my Subway sandwiches: tuna with bacon on every game
day.
I get to the gym around 4:15, get my shots up and then sit down and get ready
for the game. I go to chapel before the game and get focused. I listen to
whatever I’m feeling that day – it might be gospel, maybe R&B, maybe rap.
What have been the biggest adjustments in going from college to the pros and
then from your first into your second season?
How much you have to work, because I’ve worked hard to get where I’m at in
the NBA, and you have to work ten times harder. You have to learn how to be a
pro, come down, and be ready to learn every day. Just being more mature is
the difference, I’d say — you have to grow up when you come to the NBA. I
just had a touch of it last year, but I got the hang of it this year and it’
s been going well for me.
You've developed a reputation as a great defensive stopper. Can you describe
your mindset when you enter the game? Who’s been the toughest player you’ve
gone up against in your career?
I’m just trying to keep my guy in front of me, contain him and always know
what his strengths and weaknesses are. That’s the key when you’re going out
there and playing a guy like LeBron or Kobe. With LeBron, you want to keep
him out the lane, make him shoot jump shots and contest them. With other
guys, it’s different on every night, but you [have to] know who you’re
guarding and what they like to do.
I mean, all of them are really tough — LeBron, Kobe, Melo (Carmelo Anthony),
D-Wade (Dwyane Wade) — all those top guys are definitely difficult [to
guard]. You probably can never really shut them down, so you just try to
contain them and keep them from doing too much.
What do you think is the best part of your game and what areas do you feel
you still need to improve?
The best part of my game is my versatility — I can play every position from
the one to the five. One night I’m guarding Steve Nash, the next night, I’
m guarding Rashard Lewis, Dirk Nowitzki, or Kobe. So, it’s my versatility
on the defensive and offensive ends, because I can play inside and outside.
One thing I’m going to definitely focus on this summer is my block game, and
also my ball-handling.
What would you say has been your most memorable moment in the NBA so far?
Actually, it was just over our past holiday home stand, [when I was] able to
play against LeBron one night, Kobe the next night, and then my man, Melo.
Now, we didn’t come out with the wins like we wanted to against LeBron and
Kobe, but it was just being able to go out and play against those guys every
other night and defend them. I feel like I did a pretty good job on them.
Can you talk about the historic 35-point comeback against the Bulls and what
sparked the team to make the rally?
Before [it happened], we just weren’t playing together and we knew that we
were a better team than that. At halftime we went into the locker room and
got yelled at, of course, by Coach, and then we just went out and [said] we’
re going to play together, we’re going play hard, and we’re not going to
give up – and we didn’t. The guys that came in off the bench were playing
hard, the starters went out there and played hard, and we just came back and
ended up taking it.
What were some pranks and duties that you had to do as a rookie last season?
(Laughs) Well, of course everyone knows I got my car [filled with] popcorn.
The duties were just to bring in bagels and fruit, and on the road, making
sure players got their wake-up calls and were out of bed and on the bus.
Seeing if guys needed me to get anything, basically, is what I’d say was the
biggest one.

Who’s in charge of the rookie pranks on the team now that Bobby Jackson is
retired? As a veteran now, have you been able to get any good ones in
yourself?
Spencer (Hawes) takes care of that, along with Noc (Andres Nocioni) and Beno
(Udrih).
I don’t see myself as [a veteran] yet, but even when I do get some years,
that’s not me. I’m more of a happy-go-lucky guy, as far as just make sure
you bring your donuts, bagels, or whatever. But I’m not the kind of guy who
makes other guys do stuff.
I saw on the hilarious “Donté Greene Show” that you’re a big shoe guy.
How did your collection start and which is your favorite pair?
It started with just me growing up and not being able to have all of the
latest hot shoes. Once I got a chance to provide for myself and to be able to
have an unlimited amount of shoes, I took full advantage of it. At my house
here, I have about 200 pairs of shoes and I still got about 100 pairs of
shoes at Syracuse, and maybe about 300 pairs of shoes back in Baltimore. I’m
all about shoes.
My favorite pairs would be the Jordan XI and XII, either one, no matter what
color they are.
Do you have any hidden talents that no one knows about?
Well, it’s not really hidden as much anymore, but I can play the drums. If
you go on YouTube and search for it, I was playing the fight song on the
drums with the [Syracuse] band before the game. So, yeah, that would be my
hidden talent.
Thank you for your time, Donté. Congratulations on an exciting season for
you and the team so far, and best of luck the rest of the way.
Oh, yeah, no problem. Thanks.
