The title on his business card reads: Basketball Operations Executive
Assistant.
But to most Kings fans he's the personification of toughness, a reminder of
the Sacramento teams that were playoff contenders.
These days, Bobby Jackson is using the same hustle and grit that made him the
NBA's Sixth Man of the Year as a King to learn the ropes in an NBA front
office.
Jackson, in his first season of retirement, is enjoying life as a basketball
operations executive assistant. He's learning about scouting, the salary cap
and all things that give general managers headaches.
But for tonight, the Kings will take the time to honor Jackson in the role in
which fans came to know him best.
The Kings will hold Bobby Jackson Night when they host the San Antonio Spurs
at Arco Arena. The first 10,000 fans will receive a Jackson poster. There
will be video tributes from his playing days and community work, along with
comments from former teammates.
Jackson spent six of his 12 NBA seasons in Sacramento, including when he won
the Sixth Man of the Year Award for the 2002-03 season.
Jackson was humbled by the honor.
Bobby
"I would have never thought I'd have my own day in the NBA," he said Monday.
Since announcing his retirement last October, Jackson hasn't been sitting
around waiting to be recognized. He's immersed himself in scouting.
Jackson took at least two trips a month around the country to watch college
basketball games in preparation for this year's NBA draft.
Bobby
And he's asking a lot of questions, trying to get a better understanding of
front-office decisions.
"I'm trying to dabble in everything," Jackson said. "What I want to do is
hopefully one day become a GM or president of basketball operations or
assistant GM or director of player personnel.
"But I know one of those positions takes time, and you've got to learn the
business first."
Jackson isn't the first player with front-office aspirations. But a lot of
players don't have the patience to put in the time to climb the ladder in
management.
When the Kings are on the road and he's not watching the team practice, he's
watching video and picking the minds of Kings basketball president Geoff
Petrie, general manager Wayne Cooper and the rest of the staff.
In his new career, Jackson's work habits haven't diminished.
"One thing that I always believe is that if a guy is a worker he's a worker,"
Cooper said. "Guys that work hard as players work hard off the court. That's
the same thing with Bobby. He only knows how to do it one way and that's what
you have to do."
Jackson said the hardest part of the job is understanding the salary cap. But
he doesn't hesitate to ask about cap ramifications of trades and how the
Kings might be able to make money on a deal.
"I'm a very inquisitive person," Jackson said. "I always want to know what's
going on around me. Why are we doing this? Why are we doing that? They take
my input. They may use it, they may not use it. But you can't be a yes-sir
guy."
When Jackson retired he also took on the role of Kings ambassador.
He spends 45 minutes with fans and sponsors at home games. When Jackson isn't
traveling, he appears at community events.
Aside from being an eager learner in the scouting department, the Kings are
pleased that Jackson continues to work in the community.
"I love doing those types of things and giving back," Jackson said. "But my
main focus is to learn the business side of basketball."
Jackson looks the part of a Kings executive when he's at practice. He's not
in gym shorts waiting to give the team some competition. He admits he
"probably wouldn't last two minutes" trying to run the floor, and has taken
up boxing for exercise.
Jackson sits on the sideline, much like Petrie or Cooper would, taking in the
play. Jackson likes the improvement he has seen in the Kings, but doesn't
have any desire to go on the court at all.
He's too busy taking what he knows about basketball and applying it to his
new career.
"I have the knowledge," Jackson said. "What I don't have is what it takes to
put the whole product together. And that's something I'm willing to work on
and learn."
==================================================
