The anesthesia hadn't quite worn off, so Kevin Martin wasn't available for
comment at the moment.

So not long after his Nov. 9 surgery to repair a hairline fracture in his
left wrist was completed, a nurse asked one of Martin's family members how
long he would be out.

當他術後不久  ,一位KM的家人問護士說  "他多久可以康復?"

Before she could answer, Martin's hand slowly rose from his side. The Kings
shooting guard flashed four fingers, each one representing a week that he
expected to miss. And clearly, he was still quite delusional.

然而, 這有點癡心妄想


A month later, Martin is at least three weeks away from his return. He is
scheduled to have an X-ray Friday, with Martin hopeful the bone is completely
healed but well aware the health gods tuned out his prayers long ago.

Entering the Kings' two-game trip that starts tonight in New Orleans, Martin
has missed 14 games this season. He missed a combined 52 games in the two
seasons prior. First, it was the groin, then the ankle, now the wrist. And
every time, of course, it was depressing.

Martin has managed to keep his head up this time, mainly because he has
pursued new challenges and charities to help fill his time. He has doubled
his typical holiday load on the giving front, helping families in Sacramento
and his hometown of Zanesville, Ohio. And whether Kings coach Paul Westphal
knows it or not, Martin has deemed himself the team's newest assistant coach.

It's partly comic relief and partly serious. Martin has been smooth-talking
his way into coach's meetings to hear about that night's opponent and
routinely pulling teammates aside during games to offer observations and
advice. His miserable experience last season, Martin said, was the
inspiration.

"Last year when I got hurt, I wasn't really around that much, and when I came
back it was like a new player got drafted," said Martin, who was averaging
30.6 points per game before his surgery. "This time, I'm trying to stay
involved with the team, helping during the game, helping guys. I've been
trying to talk to (rookie guard) Tyreke (Evans), telling him things. I'm
telling Spencer (Hawes), when he gets an offensive rebound down low, don't
look to pass out, go back up with it."

"A couple times, (assistant) Mario (Elie) wasn't telling me when the
(coaches') meetings were," Martin said with a laugh. "Then at halftime the
other day, my rookie initiation as a coach was they left me (in the locker
room) and I came out with like 10 minutes left in the third and the game was
already going on. I've made a couple coaching mistakes. I'm learning."

The same could be said for the surprising Kings. After starting 1-4 with
Martin, they are 8-6 without him. With so many expecting his absence to
decimate an already struggling team, it has instead allowed a number of young
players to blossom. While Evans isn't alone in that class, he's certainly the
head of it.

In five games with Martin, Evans averaged 11.2 points on 35.4 percent
shooting (22 of 62), three rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.4 turnovers per game.
In his 13 games since, Evans is averaging 23.3 points on 48.6 percent
shooting (107 of 220), 5.8 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 3.2 turnovers.

Martin knows there is a curiosity about his return, with questions about
whether his presence will help or hinder the early season chemistry that was
largely built without him. As much as he has enjoyed his brief coaching
career, he said he can't wait to be on the floor again to provide the answers.

"I'll get back out there and everybody has got to keep playing their same
game," he said. "I'm not a guy who gets the ball and dribbles a lot. I'm not
a dominant player with the ball. I get my points in the flow, so there
shouldn't really be any change.

"I'll be back when we're at the meat of the schedule. … We need to get as
many wins as we can now, and then by the time we get healthy we'll be able to
knock teams off like the Mavericks, be competitive with the Lakers and knock
off teams like the Trail Blazers and the Spurs. It'll be good."
