Martin's 'incredible journey' with Kings comes to a close

It didn't take Kevin Martin long to feel comfortable in Sacramento.
馬丁在國王愜意的日子並沒有太久
The Zanesville, Ohio, native arrived in 2004 and was calling the capital city
his adopted hometown not long after. His small-town sensibilities meshed with
the local landscape, and his up-tempo, high-scoring talents fit with his new
team's offensive-minded ways.

He was celebrated so elaborately in the summer of 2007, when he signed a
five-year $55 million deal and was pitched as the next best King during a
downtown rally, it looked as if he would never leave.

But by the time Martin was booking a red-eye flight from Sacramento to
Houston on Thursday – having been traded in a three-team, nine-player deal
with the Rockets and New York – he couldn't wait to go.

"I had an incredible journey," Martin said by phone Thursday as the trade was
being formalized. "You go from the 17th man (on the roster) your first year
to the first man. I just enjoyed my time here.

In making the trade that brought the Kings a much-needed power forward in
Carl Landry, basketball President Geoff Petrie unintentionally did Martin a
favor. While Martin hadn't reached the point of demanding a trade, the
sixth-year player from Western Carolina University had been considering
leaving for months.

"It (was) time because the 20-point (scoring) seasons every year didn't
really mean as much to me as they did the first time, the second time, and it
was just time for opportunity to showcase it somewhere else," he said. "With
a guy like me, I'm going to be playing 35 or 40 minutes a night, and that
takes a hit on the younger guys who they're so high on."

Martin's stance was the byproduct of the changing sentiment around him that
began last season. He was no longer the "Golden Boy" for whom a number of
trades were made, in part, to help him flourish. Mike Bibby and Ron Artest,
for example, were sent to Atlanta and Houston, respectively.

When Martin sprained his ankle early last season and missed 31 games, his
toughness was questioned within the organization, leading to a change in the
relationship.

Martin's name had long since been souring from within, however, as there were
consistent complaints from Kings officials that Martin was too enamored of
his own scoring numbers and was reluctant to play tough defense.

Meanwhile, Martin began to form questions of his own. He said he wondered to
those close to him whether the Kings could become competitive at any point
during his prime and doubted the direction of the franchise.

The biggest change, according to Martin's agent, Dan Fegan, was the drafting
of rookie guard Tyreke Evans last year. Evans, from the University of Memphis
and a leading Rookie of the Year candidate, was selected fourth overall over
Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio.

As Fegan sees it, Evans' style clearly was not conducive to Martin's, whose
departure became inevitable.

"I think (Martin) felt like (the Kings) weren't being upfront with him
regarding their intentions or concerns regarding him and Tyreke," Fegan said.
"The seeds for the Kevin Martin trade were sowed the moment (Petrie) drafted
Tyreke Evans.

"As sad as Kevin is to leave Sacramento, the fans and his teammates, he's
equally excited to be going to a championship-caliber team that hopefully
makes a run in Houston," Fegan said.

興自己可以加入一隻冠軍等級的球隊，希望自己在那裡有好表現。」
After Martin's left wrist surgery Nov. 9 forced him to miss more than two
months this season, he and Evans were an inconsistent duo in their short time
together. Upon his return Jan. 15, Petrie said he foresaw a backcourt that
could be one of the league's most dynamic.

Despite opting to break it up, Petrie disputed the notion that the trade was
related to how the two players fit.

"In all fairness to Kevin, I think it's really hard to live up to those kinds
of expectations when you've been out that long," he said. "I really did think
that the last three of our last four games or so he was starting to look like
his normal self."

The problem, as Martin saw it, though, was far less focused on Evans. Younger
players were none too thrilled to give significant playing time back, while
Martin grew frustrated that he wasn't featured more heavily in coach Paul
Westphal's offense.

"When I was hurt, you look at how guys started to develop," he said. "There
was a new energy and stuff like that, and now you start to build a system
toward their strengths because your main player was out so long."
