Scot Pollard became an instant fan favorite when he arrived in Sacramento
back in 1999. The 6' 11" center, who averaged 5.9 points, 6.0 rebounds, and
one block per game in five seasons with the Kings, emerged into an invaluable
reserve and spot starter during the team's glory years. Renowned for playing
hard-nosed defense, diving for loose balls, and battling for every rebound on
the court, Scot was also notorious for his ever-changing hairstyles,
outrageous fashion sense, and quick wit.

I had a chance to talk to the former King about his old teammates, his
favorite looks, and his on-the-court mentality.  Make sure to check out his

Which players did you follow growing up, and who did you model your own game
after?

Growing up, I followed my brothers. I'm the youngest, and four (of my)
brothers played Division I, so there were a lot of games to pay attention to.

I was always a fan of Patrick Ewing, and tried to tear the rim off like he
did when I used to dunk.  I really just took things from everyone I watched
growing up.  I would see a bigman dribble up the court, and then I would work
more on ball handling.  I would see a guard post up, and (I'd) make sure my
inside game was as quick as could be.  I really didn't try to be like any one
player — I wanted to do everything well, so I ended up being pretty good at
everything, and not spectacular at any one thing.

問：甚麼樣的球員帶著你成長，而你的偶像是誰 ？
波：我在我哥哥帶領下成長，我是家中老么，我有四個哥哥在
    Division I打球，所以對那裡的比賽會特別注意。

You were well-renowned for hustling, taking charges, and doing many of the
intangibles that didn't show up in the boxscore.  Can you describe your
mindset when you entered the game?

Whenever I suited up for a game, I was preparing for war. I knew that I had a
role to play, and that role was to push, pull, knock down, chase the ball,
help on defense, take the hard foul, raise my hand if I'm close to a star
player in foul trouble and take the foul for him, block shots, grab rebounds,
tip in, dive for loose balls, and take charges.

These aren't easy things, and these are things that don't make the highlight
reels. These things hurt, and you get injured doing them — just ask how much
better I feel nowadays!  These things don't get you on an All-Star team, but
these things are necessary to help your team win.

In my mind, I knew going into a game that I was there to make the stars look
good. I didn't want to see Vlade (Divac) or Chris (Webber) in foul trouble,
or worse, (get) injured from taking a charge or diving on the floor. My role
was not to be the All-Star — my role was to do all the ugly stuff that gets
your team an extra possession, extra rebound, tip in points, whatever it
took.  I hit people on the other team to get Peja (Stojakovic) an open
jumper, I knocked people down to give Jason Williams, Mike Bibby, Tony Delk,
Bobby Jackson, Hedo Turkoglu an angle to the basket.  And I loved it.

I knew my strength in the NBA was my strength.  Why would I try to take shots
that may be questionable, when I can hand the ball off to Peja, knock his guy
down, or at least out of the way, and give one of the best shooters in the
league a shot?  I probably could have been more offensive-minded in my career
in the pros, but I was always on such good teams, I felt that I needed to be
the warrior behind the scenes that makes the little things happen.

    舉雙手再作他一個犯規、搧火鍋、抓籃板、補籃、飛身撲救失
    球以及面對每一次碰撞。

    這些事不容易，而這些事也不會讓你登上高光版面，這些事很
    危險，會讓你傷痕累累，所以我只問自己今天的狀況有多好，
    我知道這些事不會讓你入選全明星隊，但它們能幫助球隊贏球。

    我知道我上場比賽的目的就是為了讓球隊的明星打的更好，我
    不想看到Vlade和Chris身陷犯規麻煩，或是因為阻擋和撲救失
    球而受傷，我的角色不是要當全明星，而是用來幹盡髒活幫助
    球隊多掙得額外的球權、額外的籃板、機會來時把球補進籃框，
    我阻擋對手好讓Peja有空檔投籃，我撂倒敵人好讓Jason Williams、
    Mike Bibby、Tony Delk、Bobby Jackson和Hedo Turkoglu有空

You were a key member of the Bench Mob, which became integral to the Kings'
success.  Can you talk about your role and the importance of the reserves on
those Sacramento squads?

The Bench Mob was such a special group (because) we had guys that could start
and play those minutes when necessary, but were also team players that didn't
complain when the starters returned.  They played less and didn't get many
shots on a particular night, but we all understood that if we just kept our
heads and kept preparing, we would make our impact individually, as well as a
unit.

When you have the starting talent that we had (during) those years, plus the
Bench Mob, who knew their roles and played them so perfectly, we had a really
great and unique situation. The phrase "you don't know what you have until
it's gone" definitely applies to that team, as well as the Bench Mob.

So often in the NBA, bench players create problems from lack of shots,
playing time, or just an ego that tells them they should be starting — that
didn't happen in (Sacramento).  It truly was the easiest team to get along
with of all the teams I played for.  We had an idea of how special it was at
the time, but as we disbanded, for lack of a better word, we would see each
other on other "normal" teams, and (we'd) hug it out and say to each other,
"man, that was so fun!" and "wish we could be back there!"

    自己的工作並且完美詮釋自己的角色，我們有很棒而且獨特的
    系統，俗諺說「失去後才知道擁有時的美好」，這句話很適合
    用在我們隊以及板凳暴徒。

    在NBA板凳球員最常見的問題是缺少投籃機會、缺乏上場時間
    以及想成為先發球員的自尊心，在沙加緬度完全沒有這些問題，
    我所效力過的球隊中，這支球隊是最團結的，但當我們各奔東
    西後，我想不到好的字眼形容，我們在不同的「普通」隊伍再
    度聚首時，我們會互相擁抱並告訴對方「兄弟，這情況真妙。」
    或是說「希望我們可以回到那時候。」

I remember hearing each member on The Bench Mob had special nicknames.  What
were some of yours?

I had a lot of nicknames in my career.  In Sacramento, I was "The
Lumberjack," "Samurai Scot," "The Butcher," "The Garbage Man," and probably a
lot of other really mean names opposing fans had for me that I'm unaware of.

問：我記得板凳暴徒的每個人都有特別的綽號，你的是甚麼？

The Kings seemed like a very close-knit team during your tenure. How close
were you with your teammates?

The Kings teams while I was there were extremely close.  We had a lot of good
times, and for right now, I'd like to keep most of those good times between
the guys that enjoyed them with me!

However, here's a good story that is fairly innocent, as well as a great
example of how close we were.  It was Jason Williams' birthday, and we were
heading to Dallas. We talked on the way there that we were all going to go
out and celebrate, even though we had to play the (Mavericks) the next night.
By the time we arrived at the hotel in the bus, we had all agreed that we
would run upstairs, drop our stuff off, and be back on the bus in 15 minutes
— we paid the bus driver to stick around (and he was) a great sport!  Every
guy on the team came back down, we went to some clubs — (I'm) not going to
name them — and had a great night as friends.  We got back a little late,
but not one guy was late to shootaround the next day. And if memory serves me
right, we not only beat the Mavs, but we beat them by more than 20.

The difference between guys going out and having fun, and guys going out and
having too much fun is maturity. We all had our fun, but we never lost sight
of what we were being paid to do. and that was win games.  And win we did —
 a lot.

問：國王在你待的那幾年看起來是一支非常緊密結合的隊伍，談談
    你和隊友的互動有多親近？
波：當時我們的關係非常親密，我們一起度過許多美好的時光，直

    我想起一個故事可以說明我們當時有多「換帖」，那天是Jason
    Williams的生日，我們全隊前往達拉斯比賽，雖然隔天要跟小
    牛比賽，我們還是決定要一起去慶祝，當巴士到達旅館後，我
    們說好要衝上樓丟下行李，十五分鐘內回到巴士集合，我們付
    錢包下司機的車，集合完畢後我們去了幾間俱樂部，那晚大家
    玩的很盡興，回到旅館已經有點晚了，但隔天的投籃練習沒有
    人遲到，如果我沒記錯的話，那天我們不但贏了小牛，而且大
    勝20分以上。

    出門找點樂子和出門放縱的差別就在成熟度，我們都會去找點
    樂子，但我們絕不會忘記球隊付我們錢的目的，球隊要我們贏
    球，而我們也的確為球隊掙得很多勝利。

Can you take me through a typical gameday during your playing days?  Did you
have any pre-game routines?

(I would) wake up, head to shootaround, eat a donut the rookie brought in,
change into practice gear, and (go through) shootaround.  (I'd go) back home,
eat lunch, nap, wake up, head to the arena, eat some bad arena snacks about
an hour before the game, (and drink a) Red Bull.

(I would) listen to a few loud heavy metal songs and to Coach's pregame
speech.  I kept to this basic routine, but I didn't have any superstitious
stuff.  If I missed a nap, (I didn't mind) if I didn't get a good lunch.  Oh
well, I'd make up for it after the game with a big meal. Mentally, I would
visualize jumping, rebounding, and running faster than anyone on the court,
and that was carried over to the game.

問：可以介紹一下你在比賽日時的通常流程，有任何賽前的例行公
    事嗎？
波：起床後會去參加球隊的投籃練習，吃一個菜鳥帶來的甜甜圈，
    然後換練點別的，之後再繼續練投籃。結束後回家吃中飯，睡
    個午覺，起床後再去球場，比賽開始前一小時會喀一些難吃的
    球場點心配一罐提神飲料﹝Red Bull﹞。

    賽前會聽重金屬樂和教練的賽前說明，通常的例行公事就這樣，
    但我沒有特別迷信要做甚麼，沒睡到午覺我也不介意，中餐沒
    吃好也沒關係，反正賽後我會補回來。腦海中，我會告訴自己
    不論跳、抓籃板還是跑都比別人快，然後帶著這樣的信念上場
    比賽。

We've seen you sport all kinds of crazy hairstyles and facial features. What
were the inspirations behind the looks and which would you say is your
all-time favorite?

You know, hair just keeps growing back on me — I cut it, it grows back.  I
loved seeing how I would look with different hair styles and facial hair.
 "Why not?" is the mindset I had.

My favorite look was actually in Cleveland, when I had a blond mohawk and
small braids in my beard. I thought that looked really cool. However, that
look was only cool on the court. I wore a hat everywhere I went, because my
head was so cold in Cleveland's winter!

I miss having long hair, (even though) it is a pain to keep up.  Also, my
forehead is growing, so when I grow it out now, I kind of grow a natural
mullet.  I'm actually growing it out right now — we'll see what it looks
like.

問：你總是會有許多瘋狂的髮型和臉部造型，說說你的動機以及你
    最愛的造型？
波：頭髮總是一直長，我剪掉它們，它們還是會長回來，我喜歡看
    自己搭上各種髮型和鬍子的造型，我抱著「有何不可？」的心
    態來做這些嘗試。

    我最喜歡的造型是在克里夫蘭打球的時候，當時我頂著一個金
    黃色的摩霍克族髮型，然後把山羊鬍紮成辮子，我覺得這造型
    很酷，但只限於場上，下了球場我走到哪都戴著帽子，因為克
    里夫蘭的冬天太冷了，我的頭皮實在受不了。

    雖然長髮很難整理，但我還是想留長髮，我的前額也會長頭髮，

Who were the toughest players you went up against in your career, and how did
you prepare to face them?

The toughest player I had to guard was Shaquille O'Neal.  When he was in his
prime, he was unstoppable.  My preparation for him was the same as everyone
else, but it was tougher to deal with being scored on a lot because that is
something I didn't let anyone do against me.  All anyone could really do was
try to make him work a little harder.  No one else I ever guarded ever made
me feel that helpless. I pushed, he (spun) to the basket.  I backed off, he
took up the space and dunked on me.  I denied him the ball, he spun for an
alley-oop.

I prided myself in shutting centers down, and making them hate me in the
process. With him, I just made sure I didn't foul him too much early, so I
had fouls for later in the game.  And when I fouled him, a guy that shoots
around 50% from the line, it seemed like he always made them against us, and
then he'd look at me and smile.

I wanted to hate that guy, but for all of the hacks, pushes, cheap shots, and
everything else I could throw at him, he never was a jerk to me. I really
think he's a cool dude.  If we had ever been teammates, we probably would
have been buddies.

問：職業生涯中遇過最硬的對手？你如何準備以對抗他們？
波：最硬的是Shaquille O'Neal，他巔峰時期根本沒人擋的住，我
    守他的方法和大家都一樣，但你還是很難阻止他得分，我從沒
    有讓其他人這樣對我過，大家能做的事就是讓他不要這麼輕鬆

    進籃下；我往後退一點，他就有空間直接在我頭上灌籃；我讓
    他拿不到球的時候，他就直接空中接力灌進兩分。

    我最自豪的就是可以撂倒其他中鋒，讓他們恨我，但對上他，
    我只能讓自己不要過早在他身上犯太多規，好讓我在比賽末後
    段有犯規可用，雖然他罰球命中率只有五成左右，但對我們時
    他總能把球投進，然後盯著我露出微笑。

    我想恨這傢伙，但不管我駭他、推他、干擾他投籃，用盡一切
    手段阻止他，他從沒對我發怒，我覺得他真的很屌，如果我們
    能當隊友，我和他應該可以成為好朋友。

I don't mean to open up old wounds, but I have to ask — what do you remember
about Game 6 of the 2002 Western Conference Finals at the time, and what are
your feelings about Tim Donaghy's claims of a fix?

Ah, Game Six.  Here it is — the truth.  It doesn't matter what the
conspiracy theorists say, and it doesn't matter what Tim Donaghy said.  The
bottom line is, we had seven games to win four, and we didn't do it.  We were
the better team, and we didn't show it over seven games.

Even if they were to prove what Tim said is true, are they going to give the
Kings a championship banner?  Nope — it's over.  We lost, and it still hurts
a lot. When I watch footage of that series, I start to cry.  We just knew it
was our year and that we had them. We knew it was going to happen for
Sacramento!  And it didn't, and it hurts.  My consolation is that I (won) a
ring eventually, even though it was with a different team.

問：我不想揭舊傷疤，但我還是要問─你對2002年西區總冠軍賽第

How did it feel to win a title with the Boston Celtics in 2007-08?

Winning a ring with the Celtics was a bittersweet experience for me.  Bitter,
because I had season ending surgery and wasn't on the active roster, (but)
sweet because I helped that team get to that point. I wear the ring more for
the teams that I was on in my career that should have won a title, and that I
was a bigger part of, than I do for the Celtics.

It's a great franchise and city, and the fans there are great, but being
injured for most of the year made it very difficult for me to enjoy the
championship as much as I would have in Sacramento, Indiana, or Cleveland.
 All three of those teams reached their Conference Finals — Cleveland (went)
to the NBA Finals — while I was with them, and I was a much (bigger) part of
the success of those teams than I was with the Celtics. I felt, and still do
feel, that each one of those teams at one point during my years with them was
the best team in the league, and (it was) disappointing that we didn't win
rings.

Obviously, the Kings were my favorite, and there are many people who feel the
same way about us deserving a ring.  My first year in Indiana, we went to the
Eastern Conference Finals, and in my opinion, were upset by the Detroit
Pistons who went on to win the NBA Finals.

In Cleveland in 2006-07, we went to the Finals and were swept by the (San
Antonio) Spurs.  I feel we were a better team, but mentally, we weren't ready
to deal with being the underdogs.  Once we got down 2-0, we just kept playing
like we were better than them, and they just kept playing better than us.

I wear my Celtics ring for those three years of my career that were
tremendous upsets for me, and for the various franchises as well.

問：2007-08年在波士頓賽爾提克奪冠的感覺為何？
波：和賽隊一起奪冠的感覺其實是苦樂參半，苦的是我因傷結束賽
    季沒能奮戰到最後，但甜的是我的確幫這支球隊進入季後賽，
    我戴上戒指多半是為了紀念那些我職業生涯效力過的球隊，那
    些我在隊上佔有重要地位而且本該贏得冠軍的隊伍，最後我終
    於在賽隊達成目標。

    這支球隊擁有偉大的歷史、城市和球迷，但傷勢困擾讓我很難
    為這支球隊做到像我在沙加緬度、印地安納和克里夫蘭的貢獻，
    這三支球隊都打進了分區冠軍賽，克里夫蘭更進一步進了總冠
    軍賽，我對這些球隊的貢獻都遠勝於我在賽爾提克的表現，我
    一直都覺得我待過的那些球隊都是當時聯盟最好的隊伍，我們
    沒能贏得總冠軍非常令人失望。

    無庸置疑地，國王是我最愛的球隊，很多人都覺得我們應該要
    奪冠的；到了印第安納的第一年，我們也打進東區冠軍賽，但
    被當年總冠軍底特律活塞擊敗。

    2006-07賽季我和騎士隊打進總冠軍賽，但被馬刺隊掃地出門，
    我覺得我們比較強，但心智上我們並沒有做好打落牙齒和血吞
    的準備，當我們以二比零落後時，我們還是用一付我們比較強
    的心態來打球，但他們持續用實際表現證明他們比較強。

    我戴上賽爾提克的冠軍戒指是為了告慰那三年的失利，同時也
    紀念那些年的光榮歲月。

You've worked as an analyst for NBA TV and have done color commentary for
Kings and Celtics games. How has the transition been from playing to doing
television, and are you interested in coaching or working in the front office?

Broadcasting is on hiatus. I know I can do that and I have done it, but I
guess the networks are looking for someone pretty.  Right now, I haven't
really looked into coaching — I think I'm a little too mean to be a coach!
 As far as a front office job, I'm listening.

問：你目前在NBA TV擔任球評，為國王和塞爾提克的比賽作了豐富
    的講評，談談你如何從球員轉換到現在的角色？另外你有意願
    執教或加入球隊的行政部門嗎？
波：轉播比賽是消磨時間用的，我知道我能做而且我做到了，但我
    猜公司想找一個比較上像的來做。目前我還沒有認真考慮過執
    教的打算，至於行政部門的工作，我正在看看有沒有球隊有缺。
