      Bibby's grandmother dies; he plans to stay

   The Kings' Mike Bibby, who learned earlier Wednesday that his paternal
   grandmother had died of unknown causes, said he was "saddened" but had
   no immediate plans to withdraw from the team.

   Evelyn Bibby, 83, died of unknown causes at her home in North Carolina.

   "My mom (Virginia) called me at the hotel and told me," said Bibby,
   after the USA's 96-69 victory over Mexico. "I haven't talked to her
   in a while, and I haven't seen her since I was 10 or 11, but she's
   still my grandmother."

   在美國和墨西哥的賽事結束後 Bibby 的母親通知他祖母過世的消息.

   USA Basketball officials were informed of Evelyn Bibby's passing
   approximately an hour before tip-off, and, uncertain whether Bibby
   knew, decided not to approach the veteran point guard until after
   the game. Initially, there was some concern that he would become
   the second player to leave the team due to a death in the family.

   美籃官方大概在球賽開始前一小時左右接到這個消息，在不確定 Bibby 是

   During the team's training camp in New York, Los Angeles Lakers
   power forward Karl Malone left after his mother, Shirley Jackson
   Malone, died suddenly.

   Petrie on talent trail -- After spending several days and innumerable
   hours at Roberto Clemente Arena scouting for future Kings, Geoff
   Petrie returned to Sacramento and began prepping for his next overseas
   mission: the talent-richer European Championships in Stockholm, Sweden.

   Several of the game's top young prospects and established NBA stars are
   expected to compete in the Sept. 5-14 event, including Peja Stojakovic-
   - provided Serbia and Montenegro advances beyond the preliminary rounds.
   (With the Serbs having already earned an Olympic berth thanks to their
   gold medal at the 2002 World Championships, their roster figures to
   remain fluid.)

   The team's president, who was joined in San Juan by assistant
   Pete Carril at the Tournament of the Americas, was intrigued
   by a handful of players, among them Argentina swingman Andres
   Nocioni, Brazil forward Guilherme Giovannoni and Brazil center
   Anderson Varejao. Though the athletic, 6-foot-10 Varejao
   resembles all the other up-and-coming centers who lack post
   skills and prefer to play facing the basket, his baseline drive
   and spectacular dunk over Tracy McGrady on Tuesday remains one
   of the week's highlights.

   "The depth of talent is still better in Europe," Petrie said,
   "but in the last five, six years, more players are coming from
   South America. Brazil is a large country, and so is Argentina."

   Hard to tune in -- Though the U.S.-Argentina game late Tuesday
   night was one of the most entertaining and compelling games in
   recent international history, most of the worldwide audience
   was left in the dark. Literally.

   The only broadcast outside Puerto Rico is available on pay-per-view
   television, and suffice to say, NBA and USA Basketball officials are
   not thrilled about the arrangement.

   The broadcast fees of approximately $2 million dampened ESPN's
   original interest and were eventually paid by H.F. Sports, a
   company better known for its boxing promotions.

   "We had no control over any of this," one USA Basketball official
   said. "COPABA (the tournament's governing body) sold the rights.
   We've gotten e-mails and calls, but there is nothing we can do."

   Resting Nash pays off -- Canada coach Jay Triano suddenly is
   looking pretty smart. Triano, who is also an assistant with the
   Toronto Raptors, was criticized earlier in the week for resting
   Steve Nash during the final three quarters and apparently
   conceding his club's loss to Team USA.

   But in light of the team's grueling, 15-hour turnaround between
   games against Brazil on Tuesday and the Dominican Republic on
   Wednesday, it would be hard to argue with his strategy; the
   ensuing victories ensured at least a top-four finish.

   但在星期二對上巴西後隨即星期三面對多明尼克加共和國這樣令人精疲力

   "This is really a difficult tournament," said Nash, whose team
   received an ill-timed opening-day bye. "I don't know if people
   realize that. In the NBA, there's no holding, grabbing. This is
   just a butcher-fest, and to play for seven straight days is
   really tiring and taxing. I'm really proud of our team, to be
   able on the sixth and seventh day to come up with two big wins."

    Nash 表示他覺得這樣的賽程真的很嚴苛. 連續七天的比賽還有凶狠的對

   Et cetera -- San Antonio Spurs coach and Team USA assistant Gregg
   Popovich continues to exploit the overseas market. Wednesday, he
   signed Puerto Rico's Elias Ayuso to a one-year, non-guaranteed
   contract.
