Q: You were quite the dunker in college, doing the between-the-legs
stuff in competitions before it became fashionable. You were that
good?
A: Yeah, it was fun. I won a dunk contest as a senior (at Pepperdine)
in 1992. I threw it up, let it bounce, caught it, went between the
legs and dunked it left-handed. I did it once and missed it and
everyone was, 'Oh my God! Do it again!' I tried it again and won.
It was fabulous.
Q: Did your wife, Jackie, ever play basketball?
A: No, but she's working on the jump shot. She has decent form, but
she kicks her leg up on the release. As long as it goes in, right?
Q: And the kids? Any hoopers at home?
A: Oh yeah. My girls (9-year-old Chantel and 13-year-old Ta'kari)
love to play. They get real physical, too. Chantel is a hacker.
She takes after dad with all the fouls!
Q: What kind of parent are you watching them play in leagues?
A: It's funny. My wife said, "I don't know how you'll handle
watching the girls." I went and was up and down the whole time
on the sideline, "Come on!" Totally into it. My wife was looking
at me like, "Oh no! This is not good! You are not a good parent
out here!"
Q: You have said that once your contract expires in three years,
that will be it. Still true?
A: Yes. I enjoy basketball. I love it. I'll always play it. It
won't always be in the NBA. Fourteen years is what it will be
when I'm done, and that's a long career. The family has suffered
enough with me being gone so often. Hopefully, cross my fingers,
we can win a championship along the way.
Q: You want your kids to grow up with more than just sports, right?
A: I put all my eggs in one basket and it happened for me, to play
basketball. Now, I instruct my children not to do that. We read,
my oldest daughter loves the piano, all the kids like to sing,
to put on shows for us at the house. They can't just play sports
for hours or sleep over at a friend's house. None of that.
Q: Who's the primary cook at the house?
A: I am. I can do anything: fish, salmon, potato salad, barbecue.
We go in and experiment, like a science lab. I hung out a lot
with my grandmother Lucile growing up and learned how to cook.
My family likes what I cook, or they're lying.
Q: Did you freak out the kids with the sudden shaved head?
A: I was thinking of doing it, and my wife finally called my bluff
this summer. Chantel came in, saw it and reported to everyone
else. They liked it -- "That looks good, dad! Yeah!" They still
loved me.
Q: What do you and the kids watch besides NBA TV?
A: My favorite movie is "Coming to America" with Eddie Murphy. The
kids like that. We watch Scooby-Doo. I watch "Murder, She Wrote
." I love the old "Columbo." The kids will bear that with me.
We have fun with all of it.

THE DICTIONARY HAS HUNDREDS OF WORDS TO DESCRIBE DESIRE, WILLPOWER AND
DETERMINATION. YET, NONE OF THOSE WORDS PORTRAYS ME, 'CAUSE I AM MORE THAN
THAT. THERE ARE MANY WHO LOVE THE GAME, YET, THEY HAVEN'T INVENTED THE WORD
THAT CATEGORIZES THE DEPTH OF MY PASSION. WHEN IT COMES TO BASKETBALL I LOVE
DEEPER THAN MOST, I WILL POSTERIZE AND IMMORTALIZE YOU FOR LIFE
BUT A DUNK IS TWO POINTS.... AND MY GAME IS MORE THAN THAT. -VC-
