Add rap to Ron Artest's rep

The tipoff is complete for Ron Artest's rap career. The Sacramento Kings small
forward released his debut studio album, "My World," on Tuesday.
Plunk down $18.98, or $9.99 on iTunes, and you'll hear Artest's rhymes about
his rise from the mean streets of New York to the hustle of professional hoops.
The beats boom as if they're meant to be heard from down the street, while
Artest raps and takes verbal shots at his foes.

This is no kid-friendly set of jock jams. "My World" is more like the seedier
side of the NBA set to bass and drum machines, where groupies and strippers are
off-court pastimes, and a middle finger is sent straight to NBA Commissioner
David Stern.

The all-league defender comes out, of course, on the defensive. After a
one-minute opening track, Artest launches into "Haters," addressing the
infamous brawl during his Indiana Pacers days and talking smack about Stern and
"Today" co-host Matt Lauer:

Artest is as infamous as players come, sentenced to a 73-game suspension in
2004 -- the harshest penalty in NBA history -- for his involvement in the brawl
with fans.

bills. He has the clout to load "My World" with an all-star roster of rappers,
including Sean "Diddy" Combs and the hip-hop album chart toppers Juvenile and
Mike Jones.

keeping the music on the album versatile so all the songs have a different
sound, and I touch on several topics. I hope everyone enjoys it."

"My World" is Artest's first solo CD, putting him center court. And unlike
Chris Webber, the former Kings forward who flopped with a rap CD (a paltry
7,400 copies sold of "2 Much Drama," according to music tracker SoundScan),
Artest actually has some hip-hop pedigree. Artest grew up in Queensbridge,
N.Y., home to such million-selling rappers as Nas and Mobb Deep.

On "My World," Artest isn't much of an MVP behind the microphone. His rhyming
isn't tricky or distinctive enough for the big leagues, but his delivery is
convincing enough when he wants to intimidate. Artest lays back like he should
when it's time to party with strippers on "Working the Pole," though with
Artest, it's more about his persona than the particulars of his voice.

If he wasn't Artest, NBA's bad boy, this CD would register just a blip on rap
music's radar. What rapper hasn't struggled in the 'hood, or celebrated the
virtues of cavorting in the VIP room?

But it's a little more interesting with Artest. Reaching the NBA or recording a
rap album are typical dreams for kids, whether they're from the inner city or
the suburbs. Now Artest can count these both as career accomplishments.

Hearing Artest rap about hard times in his old neighborhood ("No Good,"
"Everywhere I Go") gives some insight as to why Artest is so hard-core on the
court. And he remains unrepentant, to the point of going overboard when he raps
about the Pacers brawl in "Haters":

"My World" is no fast break. If the CD were an actual NBA game, "My World"
would stretch into overtime. The disc houses 21 tracks, including skits and
interludes, and at 75 minutes is nearly the length of a Hollywood movie. Or a
Kings game that shows flashes of excitement, but ends with the star throwing up
a brick or two.
