It's official: Adelman is no longer coach of the Kings

[Updated at 3:37 p.m. Tuesday] The Rick Adelman era in Sacramento is over.
Kings president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie officially announced
coach Rick Adelman's departure from the team Tuesday at an news conference
near Arco Arena.

Petrie said the decision not to renew Adelman's contract after eight seasons
with the team was a mutual one, and came after days of discussions with the
coach and team owners Gavin and Joe Maloof.

"The dymamic that needed to be there to move forward just wasn't there,"
Petrie said. He also said Adelman's four assistant coaches have been granted
leaves of absence, with no further responsibilities to the team.
Petrie would not go into specifics as to why Adelman would not be returning
as the Kings' coach. "It just really became apparent it wasn't going to be
feasible to go forward with contract extensions or renewal with Rick," he
said.

Petrie said Adelman has "mixed emotions" about leaving the team and would be
available for comment Wednesday afternoon.

The Kings are looking for a new head coach, a task they'd like to complete as
quickly as possible, Petrie said.

Adelman compiled a 395-229 regular season record in eight seasons with the
KIngs. His teams were 34-35 in the postseason, never making it to the NBA
Finals. The Kings ended their season last Friday with a first-round play-off
series loss to the San Antonio Spurs. His best season was in 2002, when the
Kings won 61 games.

Prior to his stint with the Kings, Adelman was the head coach in Portland for
six seasons and Golden State for two seasons. His career record is 756-447,
with a 70-68 record in the postseason. He took the Trail Blazers to the 1990
NBA Finals, where they lost to Detroit.
