Before taking off for his offseason home in Princeton, N.J., Kings assistant
and Hall-of-Fame coach Pete Carril sat down with Kings.com to share his
thoughts on Sacramento’s 2009-10 season, the team’s rookie trio and the
importance of offseason workouts. Plus, Coachie relays a story about Coach
Paul Westphal that left a positive impression on him and he discusses the
areas in which he will assist Jason Thompson this summer.
Pete Carril(不好意思 我不太了解他是誰 但好像就是普林斯頓的創始者)
How would you characterize the Kings 2009-10 season?
Carril: “At the beginning of the year, after Kevin (Martin) got hurt, we had
to make an adjustment, and I was really impressed with our team play, no one
specifically, although Tyreke has been the leader of this team since the very
beginning. Everybody was pitching in, and we were looking good.
“Then, when Kevin came back, we had to make a similar adjustment to when we
had (Chris) Webber, and he came back from injury – we had to change our
lineup and never did get it straightened out to the extent that we could have.
”
What stands out to you about Tyreke Evans, Omri Casspi and Jon Brockman?
Carril: “I’d have to say our rookies (played) extremely well, led by
Tyreke, of course… He’s just a young kid. The expectations of him are too
high, but if he learns to become a more prominent point guard and things like
that, he’ll be fine. He has to work on his defense, too.
“Omri seemed to snap out of (his slump by the end of the season)… As his
skills develop, then you’re going to see something great, because he’s
fast, he’s strong and he gets in for rebounds. He has to develop his skills
and he has to learn how to guard, too — how to guard the man with the ball,
which might be one of the hardest things to do.”
“Brock has to change the perception of his play and do it himself, and sort
of think of himself as a player as opposed to being a gorilla-smasher. He’s
very fast, he can shoot and he can dribble, so he’s going to hustle and give
you a day’s work all the time.
As he thinks of himself as a player, then I think he’ll be alright.”
What has impressed you about Paul Westphal?
Carril: “He’s a positive guy. He has high goals. He has a lot of faith in
the team. He gave a talk earlier in the year on freedom that was extremely
interesting. He pointed out what freedom could do in terms of how a player
develops, how he can expand and do more than what happens when he has chains
on him — I thought it was great. It was the first time I’d ever heard it.
The average coach doesn’t talk like that. He always found something out of
every game that was good.”
Why is the offseason so important to players’ development?
Carril: “If they don’t practice during the summer and come back the same
way they are now, then they don’t care about playing. Once the season
starts, after training camp, you don’t have the time to work to improve your
game because, if you play, you’re too tired the next day to go work on your
game. You have to practice hard, but some individual things you want to work
on, you take care of that during the summer. Then, if you’re not playing and
you want to play with a guy who just finished playing a lot, he’s not that
anxious to play. So you have to do a lot during the summer – workout, do the
things that effect the outcome of the game and everything should be
game-oriented.
“You have a lot of gurus hanging around these days, having guys do these
silly drills that don’t mean anything. They feel good doing them, and they
praise them for doing everything, ‘Oh, good, that a boy!’ that kind of
bologna. In the meantime, they’re not doing anything pertinent to the game
or playing.
“I think what they ought to do is go back to their school or find places to
workout with guys who have good games and where they actually get something
done. The main thing is, stay away from these guys who are always patting
them on the back. Praise is the cheapest form of reward.”
What will your offseason workouts with Jason Thompson entail?
Carril: “We’re going to work on things. He has to improve his dribbling. He
has to improve his footwork. He was called for walking (against Dallas), and
it was the first time in a long time he was called for walking. (He used to)
always get called for walking. We have to see if he can get rid of his habit
of jumping off the floor with two feet because he doesn’t get off the
ground. Instead, jump with his one foot because he’s a foot over the rim. It
’s a habit he worked on for years, and the consequence of all these guys is
they have to learn bad habits are hard to break. If you have good ones, they’
re hard to break, too.”
What areas would like to see the team improve heading into next season?
Carril: “We have to work on defense. They have to play a lot of one-on-one.
What I’ve seen over the years — it’s been such a long time since I’ve
seen two guys guard each other one-on-one, and play hard to the point where
they’re really mad at each other and steam is coming out of their head. That
’s the only way they’re going to get better defensively and offensively. It
’s one of the drills where, if you’re on offense, you have to work on
scoring, and when you’re on defense, you have to learn to stop guys. (They
seem to have), what I call, a nonaggression pact, they sign all the time.
This guy scores and he pats you on the back and rear end — you don’t want
to do that! That’s all I’ve seen. If you see something (in one-on-one
drills) and they’re working hard that way, they’ll get better quickly.
“I feel confident we’re going to get better. Hopefully, we’ll have a
decent Draft. We could use a little bit more shooting and definitely polish
up our defense – we have to do that. We’re optimistic. As long as you have
Paul as the head coach thinking it can be done, we have a shot.”
Are you planning to be the team’s Vegas Summer League head coach again this
year?
Carril: “I won’t coach the (summer league) team again. Right now, Mario,
especially, who has ambitions of being a head coach and has the qualities to
make a good coach – he should coach the team or one of the other assistants.
”
