The players are the mystery for Paul Westphal.
對保羅來說球員是個謎。

Until training camp begins Sept. 29, the first-year Kings coach will have to
wait and wonder if his new squad will arrive with the proper dedication and
drive to start this most gargantuan of turnaround efforts. Luckily for
Westphal, the man who will help bridge the gap between now and then is no
mystery to him.
訓練營之前保羅必須等待，而且他想知道他的新部隊是否已經準備好。幸運的是，有人會

Fourth-year Kings strength and conditioning coach Daniel Shapiro worked with
Westphal during the latter's tenure as Seattle's head coach, serving as the
SuperSonics' assistant strength coach before Westphal was hired in 1998 and
after he was fired early in the 2000-01 season.
已經待在國王四年的體能教練丹尼爾之前在保羅擔任超音速教練時就共事過，在保羅之前
他就是超音速助理體能教練。

The familiarity is proving advantageous from the start, as Shapiro will head
the Kings' voluntary conditioning program beginning Sept. 8 and Westphal can
rest easy knowing the program will be efficient.

"Daniel has his program that I just let him supervise," Westphal said by
phone this week. "The main thing is I don't want to interfere with anything
he does on the court."

In other words, September is Shapiro's time to shine.
換句話說，9月就是丹尼爾發光發熱的日子。

The program is intended to ensure players are in shape at the outset of camp,
a worthy goal for a team that could use any competitive edge coming off a
franchise-worst 17-win season.
這計劃是想要確保訓練營開始時球員在狀態內。

For the players, taking Shapiro up on his offer is a chance to avoid the
annual conditioning test that garnered much attention last preseason when
center Spencer Hawes initially refused to take it.
對於球員而言，接受丹尼爾的計劃是個避免每年的體能測試的機會，去年Hawes拒絕了，這
引起很大的注意。

The test lasts approximately 10 minutes and consists of numerous sets of
full-court sprints that must be completed in a predetermined amount of time
based on a player's position.

Shapiro said he will conduct seven to 10 conditioning sessions at the team's
practice facility between Sept. 8 and camp, with the workouts including a
"combination of agility (drills), plyometrics, track and field work, and
basketball-specific court conditioning," he said. If he deems a player fit
for camp, that player bypasses the required conditioning test.
丹尼爾說他將會引入七到十種訓練方式，包括敏捷度、plyometrics(中文不知道怎麼翻)
、track and field work和籃球專用體能訓練。如果他認為球員合格了，就可以跳過那個
測試。

Shapiro said he expects to have approximately seven players take part this
time, with the others either working out by choice or unable to attend.
丹尼爾預計大概會有7名球員參加，其他的不是選擇性參加或者就是不能參加。

"What's important for me is not being able to pass the test (but) to know
that people are in decent shape – good enough shape to withstand the demands
of training camp," Shapiro said. "If I have a player who's here doing all
these workouts, then I know."
「對我而言重要的不是通過那個測試，而是了解球員在狀態內，好到可以承受得住訓練營
要求的狀態，如果一個球員做了全部的測試，那我就能夠了解」

Westphal, of course, knows Shapiro will be doing his part well.
保羅當然知道丹尼爾能夠將他的工作做得很好。

"He respects my mentor (former Sonics strength coach and current Oklahoma
City Thunder strength coach Dwight Daub)," Shapiro said. "I worked hard for
(Westphal), and he has seen me kind of go up through the ranks. I think he
has a respect and understanding of what I do."
「他尊重我的導師，我很努力在替他(保羅)工作，而他也看過我努力爬上來，我想他也對
我有份尊敬而且了解我在做什麼」

Westphal said he also understands why some players won't be attending.
保羅說他也了解為什麼有些球員不會出席。

"I'd like to see as many guys as possible, but there are also some things
that are out of your control," he said. "I just look at each situation, and
if I think somebody's not doing what they should be doing, then we'll have a
problem.
「我希望看到越多的人越好，但有時候總是不能控制的，我只是掌控全局，我想如果有些
人不是在做他們該做的，我們將會有麻煩」

"But if they have a reason for what they're doing and are taking care of
business, then we won't have a problem."
「但如果他們是有理由地在做而且很關心事業，我們就不會有麻煩」

Shapiro declined to name the players he expects to participate, but Hawes'
agent, Bob Myers, said Hawes will be among them. He did not attend the
conditioning program last year, as he was taking courses at the University of
Washington. He eventually passed the conditioning test
丹尼爾拒絕指名預期會參加的球員，但Hawes的經紀人說Hawes會在其中，去年他沒有參加
，因為他在華盛頓大學上課，最後他通過體能測試。
