Rousing Rally Leads Mavericks Past Kings
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Dec. 25 (Ticker) -- The Dallas Mavericks finally played
the kind of game coach Don Nelson assumed would happen more frequently.
Dirk Nowitzki scored 22 of his 31 points in the second half as the Mavericks
rallied from a 16-point halftime deficit and pulled out an impressive 111-103
victory over the Sacramento Kings.
In their first game on Christmas Day, the Mavericks shot 45 percent (13-of-29
)from beyond the arc, something that Nelson had rarely seen this season. His
team won 15 of its first 27 games while shooting 32 percent from the arc and
avera ging six three-pointers.
"That's something we haven't done," said Nelson, whose team made 38 percent
of its three-pointers last season. "I assumed that we were going to be good
in that area, and we're one of the worst three-point-shooting teams in the
league.
"But tonight, we were very good. I had visions of us making that shot and
extending defenses. But it hasn't happened to us very often this year."
It didn't look like it was going to happen at ARCO Arena, where a boisterous
crowd watched the Mavericks misfire on 8-of-11 attempts from the arc in the
first half and shoot just 40 percent overall en route to a 60-44 deficit at
the break.
But that all changed in the second half as the Mavericks scrapped their
offensive game plan and focused on ball movement to create open shots. It
worked as 17 of their 29 assists came in the second half.
The new approach seemed to work early as Dallas opened the half with a 19-4
run that got them within 64-63 with 7:19 to play on a jumper by Antawn
Jamison.
"It was like two different games -- there was a first half and there was
a second half," Nelson said. "In the second half our offense just wasn't
working, so we junked the whole thing and just went to passing. We just
wanted to get ball movement and player movement."
"We did a lot of motion," added Nowitzki, who scored 12 points in the fourth
quarter. "It was fun. We all shared the ball, driving and kicking. That's
our type of basketball."
Nowitzki exploited mismatches due to the absence of the suspended Peja
Stojakovic and injured Chris Webber to get to the foul line, where he made
all 10 of his attempts in the fourth.
In a season-high 47 minutes, Nowitzki bounced back from Tuesday's six-point
outing at Portland, making 9-of-22 shots, 3-of-6 from the arc.
"He was great,"Dallas point guard Steve Nash said. "Obviously, not only did
he score the ball, he got to the line, got the rebounds, made some great
passes and had no turnovers.
"That's an amazing statistic for a guy his size, handling the ball, driving
to the basket and not turning it over in 47 minutes. That's incredible."
In the second half, Dallas outscored the Kings, 67-43. It finally grabbed an
88-86 lead on a three-pointer by Antoine Walker with 7:21 to play. Walker
scored 23 points and led the Mavericks with five three-pointers.
None was bigger than the one he hit from the top of the key with 64 seconds
left that gave the Mavericks a 106-103 lead.
After Mike Bibby's three-pointer over the outstretched arms of Michael
Finley forged the 12th deadlock of the game, Walker took a feed from
Nash and silenced the crowd with his fifth three-pointer of the contest.
Dallas has just four road wins this season, but it has beaten the Los
Angeles Lakers, San Antonio Spurs and Kings in their buildings.
"We have an unbelievable squad I think," said Nowitzki, whose team is just
4-10 away from home. "We just haven't been clicking well together. Last year
we started off well, but at the end we kind of fell short. Hopefully this
year it'll be the opposite."
Playing without Stojakovic, their leading scorer, the Kings fell to 15-2 at
Arco Arena, which was hosting a Christmas Day game for the first time.
