Brown agreed with Thomas that the Knicks are “still a work in progress”.
At the same time, “I wouldn’t be here today if I didn’t believe in this
franchise and this roster,” said Brown. “I’ve coached almost everyone in
the league by now at one time or another. We have kids who can get better.
We have high-character kids. I’m excited about the players here. I’m
excited about the draft-picks.”
While on draft-picks, the new Knicks coach strongly disagreed with the
prevailing opinion of him preferring not to use young players.
“First of all, I’ve probably coached more rookies of the year than anyone
in the league,” he said. “Secondly, you can’t fool players in the NBA.
The players who deserve to play WILL play -- whether they are 20 or 35 years
old does not make a difference.”
As to his alleged Olympic-sized differences with star guard Stephon Marbury,
“It’s the farthest thing from the truth,” said Brown.“Stephon accepted
coaching. Stephon got better every game. In fact, seeing his growth was one
of the nicest things about that not all that positive experience.”
“You can’t win unless you have a point guard who is one, an extension of
yourself, two, an unbelievable competitor, and three, wants to make his
teammates better,” said Brown. “The most important thing is that Stephon
wants to be coached. And that he clearly wants to win. But this thing is not
really about Stephon. In basketball, winning has to be a collective thing.”
How did he turn shoot-first Chauncey Billups into a championship point guard?
“I’ve never quit,” smiled Brown. “I was relentless in what I asked him
to do.”
That relentlessness can include management.“As far as general managers go,
I probably drive them crazy just a little bit,” smiled Brown.
“I’m in the office every day discussing ways to get the team better,
discussing ways to win.”
“I’m looking forward to it,” said Thomas. “Every coach I’ve ever hired
had a voice in the personnel decisions we’ve made. And this won’t be any
different.”
