Kurt Thomas was named a tri-captain yesterday, joining Allan Houston and Stephon Marbury, and yet Thomas might not start at power forward.
The club has been encouraged by the development of Michael Sweetney, who yesterday received a strong endorsement from Marbury.
"Sweetney has been dominating the paint," Marbury said. "He's showing that he's the guy who can definitely fill that void playing the four position."
Of course, Thomas is the incumbent and has a better outside shot than Sweetney does. However, the Knicks have tried to trade Thomas and have most recently talked to Minnesota about a deal for Wally Szczerbiak.
Asked if being named a captain makes it harder for the Knicks to trade him, Thomas said: "I have no idea. Patrick Ewing's been a captain and he was traded."
