CHARLESTON, SC, October 6, 2004 -- The Knicks held their second day of
training camp on Tuesday at John Kresse Arena on the campus of the College
of Charleston in Charleston, S.C.
With a handful of newcomers, this year’s training camp is important to
building team chemistry. Jamal Crawford is sure to play an important role
on this year’s squad and head coach Lenny Wilkins likes what he has seen
from the fifth-year player out of Michigan.
“Jamal is picking things up very well and I think that he likes what he sees,
” said Wilkins. “He has been playing at the 1 and 2 positions and he is
fitting in very well. I think that he is very capable of playing both of
those positions. He is that good.”
Another player that Wilkins likes is Mike Sweetney, a second-year player
out of Georgetown who saw limited action last year for the Knicks.
“I thought that in the summer league Mike’s confidence soared and he
started to run the floor better,” commented Wilkins. “His strength is
getting the ball off the glass and that works both offensively and
defensively. You never go away from your strength.”
The Knicks lone draft pick from last year, Trevor Ariza, has also caught
Wilkins eye. The 6-8, 200 lb forward out of UCLA, has shown the dedication
that it takes to make it in the league.
“I like Trevor,” said Wilkins. “Trevor is a gym rat, we have to push him
out of here. What I like about him is that he respects everyone but he’s
not in ‘aw’ of anyone. That is the kind of attitude you have to have.”
Ariza is enjoying his first training camp and learning a lot about the game
at this level in the process.
“I’m having fun,” said Ariza. “The veterans are teaching me a lot.
I just want to learn as much as I can. You just have to keep going hard out
here and never give up.”
The Knicks will resume practice at 10:00am Wednesday morning.
