http://tinyurl.com/4zxpun8 BY CHRIS ALVINO ON MAR 19, 2011, 8:45 PM I have been on a recent hiatus from contributing to this site over the last couple of weeks. During that span, there has been plenty going on, plenty of talk, plenty of good, and surely plenty of bad regarding the Knicks. One issue that I have been requested to chat about was the announced ticket price spike. Perhaps I will speak more on that in the future, but for now, I will say this. I am not a Knicks’ season ticket holder. I do not make it to many games during the year as my schedule just does not permit for it. For those of you that will experience the ticket price spike and have to choose whether or not to pay this added premium, I do empathize. Some of the projected increases for certain seats is unbelievable and will probably price some long time customers out of the building. However, that is a choice that people have the ability to make for themselves. We live in a society where fair market value for a product or a service is what a customer is willing to pay for it. I was certainly no economics major in college, but I do understand that there is a limited supply of seats that James Dolan has to offer to Rangers and Knicks home games. If the demand for those seats outpaces that limited supply, even at escalated prices, then I cannot sit here and blame Dolan for this move. The only way to prevent a spike is to call Dolan’s bluff. Something tells me however that the tickets will be sold in spite of this price spike. Just a hunch I guess. Now that I got that out of my system, I have to touch on what the average fan should care much, much more about – the on-court play of this current Knicks bunch. The team has not only been a .500 ball club since the Carmelo Anthony trade was made, but this team has looked every bit the part of a true .500 ball club. Inconsistency, discontinuity and confusion have developed obstacles on this team’s road to success. One game, the team can hit 20 30 pointers and win in impressive and imposing fashion. The next? The next game they lose to the Pistons. Enough said. Before I get much further, my overarching feeling about this team is that they will eventually mesh. They will eventually become a cohesive unit. Lastly and most importantly, they will eventually win. No empire was ever built overnight, and clearly this Melo – Amare tandem has not yielded the expected results – yet. Sometimes good things take time to develop, and the team is going through some early growing pains right now. The results have not been all bad since the trade. For every fan that will complains about losing to the Cavs and Pacers both twice and the Pistons last night, do not forget about some of the wins that this new look Knicks squad has had, including blowing out playoff caliber teams in the Grizzlies, Hawks, Jazz, Hornets as well as beating the Heat in Miami. Do those games mean anything? To steal a thought from the immortal Mike Francesa, you cannot take this team’s temperature after every single game. In New York and with new aged media, it is tough for fans not to take this team’s pulse every single day, but at the same time it is unfair to do that. When the smoke clears, expect this team to make the playoffs as either the 5th, 6th or 7th seed. If that does not happen, then this conversation can take a completely different tone. But instead of analyzing this team’s performance from a pure win-loss perspective, I would like to point out the overarching problems that I see, and have seen, with this team during the 2010-2011 campaign. I have stated constantly on this site that super stars win in this league. Most everyone can agree that this is a super star driven league and a super star driven sport. Right now, the Knicks have two such caliber players in Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire. While the team cannot win solely because of them, they have a good enough supporting cast around them to make some serious noise. You see, to me, the problem is not the talent on this team. The current roster has plenty of that. Rather the bigger issue with this team is the consistency of this team’s drive. The consistency of this team’ s heart. The consistency of this team’s will to win. Those things have to stem from the team’s two superstars, or else the team simply will not succeed. In watching some of this team’s recent losses, I look no further than the team’s than the super stars. First, I will look at Amare Stoudemire. As great as he has been this season, no one can deny that he has not been able to stop opposing forwards this season. Blake Griffin, Elton Brand, JJ Hickson, Tyler Hansbrough, Kevin Love, just to name a few have all torched the Knicks this season. I know it would help if Amare had a legit center to play alongside him, but at some point, Amare has to step his game up and put his foot down against these opposing power forwards. It is almost becoming a common theme to watch Amare get outrebounded and bullied around in the paint against some of these inferior players. His toughness, his grit and his defensive intensity have to improve. Even last night I saw Ben Wallace – that is right, Ben Wallace – beat Amare baseline for two lay-ups. Ben Wallace. As if that was not bad enough, I saw Chris Wilcox make Amare look like a point guard in the paint last night. In this league, for big men to be truly successful on both ends of the floor, they have to be tough. In the land of the giants, play hard or get played. As noted on this site, Amare has publicly stated that the team should go back to playing speedball. First, how about grabbing a few rebounds and throwing some elbows in the paint? Then you can worry about this team’s offensive game plan. Now, let’s talk about Carmelo Anthony. Prior to the big deal, a friend of mine who was against dealing away our former young core said to me that he never liked Melo’s body language out on the court. He did not deny his talent or his physical abilities, but he did question his drive. Since his arrival, I have been able to somewhat understand his view. Last night in the final minute of the game, his poor body language was on full display and it cost the team a chance to tie the game. After missing a lay-up with about thirty seconds left, Carmelo pouted about the no-call (as he always does) before heading back on defense only to stand around with his hands on his hips. While watching, I said to my dad that Carmelo looked like he was in absolutely no position to make a defensive play. The action was on the other side of the court, but had the ball shifted to his side, Melo would not have been able to react to it. Within seconds, a shot went up and Melo half-heartedly went for the rebound, only to have it stripped away from him. With that, the Knicks’ chance came to end. The game was over. It was a ball that Melo should have had, but he was not in position to make the play. I was left only to question his intensity after that. After missing the lay-up, foul or not, I would expect a true star to have one thing and one thing only on his mind, I am going to get that ball back and I am going to make the next shot. Well, Carmelo had a chance to get the ball back. And he blew it! Earlier in the week, Carmelo went on public record as to question the coaching staff’s defensive schemes. He pleaded for the team to simplify its defensive strategy. To an extent, he can be right. However, there has never been a defensive scheme in the history of basketball that did not require some effort. No defensive strategy, whether it be complicated or simple, can work unless the players actually work hard on the defensive end. As we all well know, the core underlying point to any defensive strategy is to keep the opponent from scoring. Carmelo, if it is a simple defensive strategy that you want, then just keep that core underlying point in your head. Do not get beat off the dribble. Do not let the opposition get easy buckets. Get into the face of the opposing offensive player. Do not let your man score. How is that for simple? All in all, I do expect this team to mesh and I am not getting too caught up in this team’s record heading into the playoffs because once the playoffs start, records will not matter. Instead, I do get caught up with the overall feel of this team’s play. From where I am sitting, this team has to have a stronger will to win than it has shown of late. Talent alone will not win a championship. The drive, or should I say a consistent drive, to do so has to be there as well. If the lack of such a drive continues to be an underlying problem for this team, then therein lines the problem. It has to start with team’s two studs.
