Kobe Bryant's new deal has a couple of interesting features, including a
no-trade clause, which is virtually unheard of in the NBA.
Quote:
A "no-trade" clause can be negotiated into an individual contract if the
player has been in the NBA for at least eight seasons, and has played for the
team with which he is signing for at least four seasons. They don't have to be
the immediately prior four seasons -- for example, Horace Grant got a no-trade
clause from Orlando when he signed with them in 2001. He had played for Orlando
for four seasons, but had played for Seattle and Los Angeles in the interim.
Very few players actually have one of these no-trade provisions. Otherwise,
individually negotiated contracts may not contain no-trade clauses. The
no-trade clause prevents the team from making a trade involving the player
without the player's consent.
He also has a 15% trade kicker and is going to get paid most of his annual
salary before he ever steps on the floor.
Quote:
Teams are permitted to write a bonus called an "assignment bonus," or more
conventionally a "trade kicker," into contracts. This bonus is paid to the
player when he is traded (within 30 days following the trade), but only upon
his first trade and not upon subsequent trades. The trade kicker is for a
specific dollar amount, but this amount is limited to 15% of the remaining
value of the contract. For trades, these kickers can be a nuisance. When a team
trades for a player with a trade kicker, it must count the portion of the
kicker that applies to that season as incoming salary.
Basically in a nut-shell.....Kobe isn't going anywhere for the next 7 years...
.when he said "Laker for Life", he meant it!
According to the conditions of the seven-year, $136 million deal with the
Lakers, he was paid 70% of this coming season's $14.2 million - $9.94 million -
back on Aug. 15. A good arrangement to have considering all of his legal fees,
right? In future seasons, he will get 70% of his forthcoming salary every Sept.
1, rather than receiving the conventional twice-monthly checks during the
season. The deal tops out at $24.8 million in the final season, which is at his
option.

Kobe's contract annual breakdown

$14.18M $15.95M $17.72M $19.49M $21.26M $23.03M $24.81M
