No i'm not a Laker fan - or anything of that nature, but I would just like to
share with you guys my personal opinion on your current team and the hiring of
Rudy T.
For starters, I believe you guys have a very well balanced team. Very under-
rated because of the quality of vets you guys have at the 4 and 5 position, and
the youth you have running the wings. Having a few veterans on a team that know
when and how to pick up the slack at certain times is a must to have in order
to be a competitive team.
I will be bluntly honest with you though...I don't like the signing of Rudy T
. I've made it known serveral times here and there - but IMHO, I would have
signed many other qualified coaches before I looked at Rudy.
I'm not saying that Rudy is a terrible coach - but you guys don't have the
personel that Rudy needs. IMHO - he's a white version of Doc Rivers. He's a
poor play-caller, an average tactnician, but an excellent motivator. Your team
needs more of a "play calling" type of coach more than the strengths that Rudy
brings. He often abuses one particular play throughout the game until the de-
fense catches on. He plays star ball...just like Doc Rivers. Plays to give your
star the advantage, but not the team unless they can shoot.
But here's the catch. IMHO - these type of coaches can only excell with star
bigmen. Bigmen can cancel out a lot of the problems a coach like Rudy or Doc
can have because it gives them a gameplan that's efficient by default. A bigman
provides an easier position to attack from. It's easier for them to create for
others because you know where they are going to be each time up the floor. When
you have to coach perimeter players, you have to worry about creating from the
outside and the inside - which makes Rudy or Doc type of coaches worry too much
about how they are going to get that player the advantage. Rudy did it with
Francis as well.
I'm guaranteeing you this, he'll abuse Kobe for entire stretches of games...
almost calling every play through him. He doesn't have "play structure"...but
his style is structured because he abuses a few particular plays so often. I
can see Lamar trying to find his place on this team because of Rudy's poor play
-calling. To a Kobe fan, that might sound nice - and it might sound like a
great thing to have everything go through Kobe...but it's fools gold. It takes
away a lot of other things. It makes Kobe use up energy. It puts a lot of
pressure on Kobe to provide for the Lakers. It demands that Kobe will have to
think more, do more, and especially now with GP off the roster...create more.
I watched serveral Rocket games when Rudy was the coach and when JVG was the
coach. IMHO - With Rudy, yes Francis played better when it comes to overall
scoring...because Rudy constantly abused plays that helped Steve throughout the
entire game; But with JVG, even though Francis didn't have a lot of the oppur-
tunities he had with Rudy because of JVG's timeclock management style, Francis
was a different player down the stretch of games. It was clear as daylight the
differences in Francis under Rudy and the Francis under JVG when it came to
late game scoring. He was a bigger threat with JVG.
What coaches like Doc and Rudy do is put too much pressure on their star
players throughout entire games...and if you aren't the star player...and aren'
t good without the ball in your hands - you are basically going to suffer. The
only way I've seen that theory wrong is when the star is either a pointguard
and has the job of creating for others or the other player next to the star is
a pointguard and is a nice mid-range shooter.
Lamar is decent without the ball, but he's not great. He's more of a mis-
match player. A Tight-End of Basketball. He takes advantage with the ball when
he has a smaller player on him or a bigger player on him. He rarely cuts - but
can pickup garbage points...something that is great if you are a 3rd or 4th
option, but not that great if you are the 2nd. Last season with the Heat, Lamar
was between the 2nd and 3rd option on a night to night basis...depending on how
Eddie or Wade played.
The thing is Rudy/Doc ball is not a designed 1st/2nd option struture. It's a
1st option scheme that hopes other players step up...something that doesn't
have any benefit unless your team is nice on defense. Sorry to say, but Rudy is
as good of a defense teacher as Doc Rivers.
Does this mean that the Lakers will have a poor season? No. Rudy ball picks
up the slack every now and then because it has potential to pull out Blow-Out
games out of nowhere because of the pressure it puts on the 1st and 2nd quar-
ters (especially the 2nd) - when teams aren't yet into the game, But it's not
playoff basketball. It lacks consistency.
