Kobe's new team star-laden too
Bryant's representatives, Mackey and Haddon, are very highly respected. They
face relatively inexperienced opposition.

The merit of a sexual-assault accusation against Kobe Bryant might be a matter
of fierce debate, but all sides agree the Lakers star couldn't have picked a
better legal team to represent him.
Pamela Mackey and Hal Haddon, whose list of high-profile clients includes John
and Patricia Ramsey and author Hunter S. Thompson, are "sought after by
lawyers, corporations and individuals," said Jeralyn Merritt, secretary of the
National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
A decision on whether Bryant, 24, of Newport Coast, will face charges in the
alleged June 30 sexual assault involving a 19-year-old female employee at an
exclusive resort in Eagle, Colo., is expected this week, Fifth Judicial
District Attorney Mark Hurlbert said.
Bryant, who has maintained his innocence, turned himself in to the Eagle
County Sheriff's Department on July 4 on suspicion of felony sexual assault.
He was released on $25,000 bail. The woman's name is being withheld by the
Register because of the nature of the allegations.
"There's not a better law firm in the country for defending citizens accused
of crime," said Gerry Goldstein, a San Antonio lawyer who teamed with Haddon
to represent Thompson against drugs, explosives and sexual-assault charges.
Mackey, 46, represented Colorado Avalanche goalie Patrick Roy in a domestic-
violence case involving his wife, Michele, in 2001. The case was dismissed
after Michele Roy came forward with new information. Mackey also represented
Jeane Newmaker, the mother charged in the "rebirthing" therapy death of her
daughter.
In the 1990s, Mackey served as a public defender in Eagle County, which
includes the Lodge and Spa at Cordillera. That is where the attack allegedly
occurred and where Bryant stayed while in town for minor surgery July 1 on his
right knee.
Haddon, 62, defended John and Patricia Ramsey in the highly publicized slaying
of their 6-year-old daughter, JonBenet.
Mackey and Haddon are known for having straightforward, no-nonsense attitudes.
Their ethics are beyond reproach, and they are thorough in their work,
colleagues said, hiring only top-notch private investigators to assist them.
There are no courtroom antics, dramatic shows or table-pounding during trials.
Instead, they build cases using facts and "bring credibility and gain the
respect of the jury," said Gale Miller, an attorney with the law firm Davis,
Graham & Stubbs, where both Haddon and Mackey began their careers.
"Every accused citizen needs a Hal Haddon or Pam Mackey to defend them,"
Goldstein said.
While Bryant is in the hands of the Rocky Mountains' legal dream team, the
youthful-looking, blond Hurlbert, 34, and newly elected Eagle County Sheriff
Joe Hoy have emerged as the ski-resort region's homespun underdogs.
"The strategy here is the legal version of shock and awe," said Laurie
Levenson, a professor at Loyola Law School. "They're coming in with big guns
and hoping to intimidate the local law enforcement and DA."
Neither Hurlbert nor Hoy was available for comment.
Hurlbert grew up near Eagle in Dillon and graduated from Dartmouth College and
the University of Colorado Law School.
In 1994, Hurlbert became the Fifth Judicial Deputy District Attorney, covering
Eagle, Summit, Lake and Clear Creek counties. He became district attorney in
December, earning $67,000 a year.
"This is an important case for his reputation," said Eagle attorney Jim
Fahrenholtz, who has faced both Hurlbert and Mackey in Colorado courtrooms.
"I'm sure he (Hurlbert) wants to cover all his bases before his next decision,
especially against that kind of defense team. Certainly, we don't want to be
portrayed as a hick town with an Andy-from-Mayberry police department who
jumped the gun."
Vail-area papers criticized Hoy, 55, a 13-year law-enforcement veteran who
worked patrol, for being a "cowboy" when he bypassed Hurlbert's office to
get Clear Creek Judge Russell Granger to issue Bryant's arrest warrant. Hoy
was elected in November and took office Jan. 14 as Eagle County Sheriff, a
$75,000-a-year job.
The early protocol breach of the Sheriff's Department obtaining a warrant
without first receiving the approval of the district attorney doesn't help the
prosecution either, Levenson said.
"What I see happening in the press is a harried DA having to put out the
fire with a case that may not have any substantial underpinnings on it,"
said Robert Pugsley, a professor at Southwestern University School of Law. "
I think it's a very embarrassing situation."
But a local attorney believes that a proper warrant has been issued given
the judge's reputation.
"Judge Granger is a very, very, very thorough and prudent judge who's well-
respected in the legal community," Fahrenholtz said.
"He'd know who Kobe Bryant is, and he wouldn't have issued that warrant unless
there was probable cause."
Mackey has criticized the Eagle County Sheriff's Department investigation
and arrest of Bryant, labeling them a show of "complete bias."
Haddon and Mackey have not commented beyond the statement released a few
days after Bryant's arrest, maintaining his innocence.
"I respect them for that (not talking) because I think they're trying to
keep this from being part of the media circus," Pugsley said. "They're doing
what's in the best interest of their client, and that's what a good attorney
is supposed to do."
Haddon used the same approach during the JonBenet Ramsey case, but his
strategy then failed to quell the leaks in information that drove the still-
unsolved case to front pages across the country and triggered rumors and
speculation.
Haddon graduated from Duke University Law School. He worked as a federal
public defender before going into private practice. He also has maintained
strong political connections dating to 1974, when he ran Gary Hart's
Senatorial campaign.
"Hal is a very, very smart guy, and he's very hardworking and a very
thorough guy as well as being (good) in the courtroom," said Thomas Ragonetti,
a land-use attorney in Denver who is familiar with Haddon's work.
"If I or one of my loved ones ever had a need for criminal defense, there's
only one person I'd go to: Hal Haddon."
Mackey got her law degree from George Washington University and joinedDavis,
Graham & Stubbs for a short time before becoming a public defender in Eagle
County. She later joined Haddon, Morgan, Mueller, Jordan, Mackey & Foreman,
a firm chock-full of attorneys who started out as public defenders.
A background in public defense, legal experts say, is the foundation of the
best criminal-defense attorneys.
"In terms of having empathy for your clients and passion for the cause, when
you come right out of law school and go in that direction, it's ingrained,
it's second nature. It's not a job," said Merritt, a criminal-defense lawyer
in Denver.
Haddon and Mackey have received the highest ratings from members of the Bar in
the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory. The ratings indicate "very high to pre-
eminent legal ability and very high ethical standards."
Among colleagues, Haddon, Mackey and others in their firm are known as
lawyer's lawyers, often called upon to represent their peers in civil and
criminal cases as well as before the Bar's grievance committee.
They have opened their elaborate offices - complete with a swimming pool and
billiards room - to play host to parties for the National Association of
Criminal Defense Lawyers.
"They have a very talented, well-greased machine that operates while you
sleep," Goldstein said. "And it (their office) is not a battleship gray, it'
s a well-run machine with a sense of humor."
