The sexual assault case against Kobe Bryant has exacted a grueling "personal and professional toll" on the NBA star, according to defense attorneys who insisted Tuesday they want a trial as quickly as possible. The court filing was in response to requests by the 19-year-old accuser and prosecutors urging the judge to set a trial date. Bryant's attorneys said the Los Angeles Lakers guard has always wanted an early trial date. "The accuser's false accusation of rape has exacted a personal and professional toll on Mr. Bryant that is as incalculable as it is indescribable," attorney Hal Haddon wrote. "No one looks forward to this case being over more than Mr. Bryant." However, the defense said it would wait to enter a not guilty plea until most or all the pretrial hearings are completed. Those hearings are currently scheduled well into May. The woman's attorney, John Clune, said the woman has received "literally hundreds of phone calls and e-mails threatening either death or mutilation." Haddon, however, said Clune's request contained "incorrect and/or misleading claims about her personal situation that are calculated to create public sympa- thy." The defense said it rebutted those claims in a sealed court filing. Scott Robinson, a Denver defense attorney familiar with the Bryant case, said the pretrial proceedings without a trial date were not unusual. He said attorneys in the case are simply arguing "for the purposes of communicating to the world." "It just seems like they're taking turns pounding their chests and saying, 'bring it on,''' he said.
