《應用英文》寫推薦信的「偷懶」辦法(一)

在美國要想找個白領工作(多半是專業或半專業性)或進高等學府深造，似乎都要推荐信
(letter of recommendation/reference)，不論為學生、同事、部屬或朋友寫，都是一件
「花時間」、「傷腦筋」的差事。難怪也有老中乾脆說：「你自己寫，我簽名就行。」
的確，在這工作繁忙，生活緊張的社會裡，大家都在追求辦事簡單、快速與方便。於是我
就想出這種「偷懶」省時的辦法，把一般專業性與半專業性推荐信內容，大致分為：(1)
開頭語 (2)品德修養 (3)學歷與經驗 (4)工作表現 (5)結尾語。(老外特別重視品德修養
和工作能力，所以例句較多)。
需要時，由各項例句中，挑選一些想要而適合的句子，再把句中的人名、職位和機構的名
稱，加以改變，只要段落分明，就可組成一幫推荐信。希望這對一些老中，有點幫助。(
至少是guideline)
(1)開頭語(introduction)：
通常包括寫信的目的，與被推荐者的關係或申請工作的性質等。(信中第一次提起被推荐
者，要寫其全名)。
例如：
It is a pleasure to write a letter of recommendation on behalf of Mr.
Chung-hua Lee who has applied to you for a computer programming position.
能為李中華先生申請電腦程式工作寫封推荐信，是件愉快的事。
At the request of Mr. Robert Smith, a former student of mine, I am writing
this letter in support of his application.
我過去學生Robert Smith, 要我為他寫這封信支持他的申請。
Miss Fu-mei Lin has worked as a graduate student under my direction from May
2, 2001 to date.
She has asked me to write on her behalf and I willingly offer the following
comments:
從2001年五月二日到現在，林富美小姐在我指導下，擔任研究生工作。她要我為她寫這封
信，我很願意提出以下觀點：
This is to recommend Jack Wang who comes from a family of good standing in
Taiwan.
在此推荐 Jack王先生，他係來自台灣名聲良好的家庭。

B.S in engineering in 2004. During that time he was a student in my class.

through several increasingly responsible positions until he reached his
present position as a senior research fellow.

I am pleased to have the opportunity of providing a reference for Mr. Robert
Wang.
我很高興有機會為Robert 王先生提供一封推荐信。

years. She was responsible for preparation of financial reports such as
balance sheets and profit and loss statements.

I Understand that Mr. Chung-hua Lee is being considered for a computer
position in your company. I truly believe that you will find him to be an
excellent employee.

This is to certify that I was a colleague of Bob Wang when we both were on
the faculty of James college, and that I know him well.

As a lab assistant with this department, Mr. Robert Chen has worked under my
supervision for the past three years. He has been completely reliable and
kept the lab in excellent condition.
Robert 王先生在我指導下，做了三年的實驗室助手。他十分可靠，並且把實驗室保持得
井井有條。
Mr. Robert Smith has asked that I write a letter of reference based on our
professional connection during the past five years.
Robert Smith先生請我寫這封推荐信是根據我們過去五年來專業上的來往。
(2)品德修養 (personality and character)：
一般包括誠實可靠，為人相處和熱心服務等。(這些都是老外特別重視的，他們對學位和
名校反而列為次要)
例如：
Miss A is a congenial, pleasant and intelligent young lady. With her pleasing
personality, she gets along unusually well with her fellow staff members.
A小姐是位和藹親切，才智聰慧的姑娘；她有令人喜愛的個性，與同事相處得特別和諧。
He respects others and treats them with dignity. The time I spent with Mr. A
was an illuminating and rewarding one.
A先生以尊重的態度敬愛他人。我與他相處，可謂獲益不淺，也是極有意義的時光。
His sense of humor has made life happier and easier for those who know him.
He is honest with people, dedicated to his job and loyal to his friends.

willingness to take responsibility has been impressive.

and personable person, whose first thought seems to be “ What can I do for
you? ”

requirements but deserves special commendation.

(5)結尾語(summary or conclusion):
這是對被推荐者總結意見，或願意提供其他資料。
例如:
Mr. A will be a valued employee from every point of view. Whatever he seeks
to do, he will do well.
從各方面來看，A先生是位難能可貴的員工；不管他想做什麼，他都會做得很好。
I am confident that Mr. B would be an asset to any firm that can use his
services.
我有信心，B先生對任何能聘用他的公司，都是難得之才。
I recommend. Mr. A most highly for any position for which he qualifies,
believing that he will be great gain to his prospective employer.

例如:

off several full-time professionals in favor of part-time semi-professionals.

員
As Mr. A refused to accept a part-time position, we had no other full-time
opening for which he was qualified(at that time)
A先生不願接受半職工作，而(那時)我們又沒有合適他的全職工作。
I believe Mr. A left us to pursue a more challenging job opportunity.
我相信A先生離職，是要追求更有挑戰性的工作機會。
We would be sorry to see him go, but we understand his desire for a position
that could offer more rapid advancement.

A先生離開本部門，是因為他個人原因而作出決定。

leaving will be felt across our campus.
從各方面來看，他是位難能可貴的員工，他離職的深遠影響，我們全校將有感受。
I believe Mr. A left us for family reasons. We would have him back with us
again if there were an opening now.
我們相信A先生離開是因為家庭的原因。假如我們現在有空缺，還是希望他再回來。
注意事項:
(1)本文全部例句裡所指的人，性別和動詞時態，都可改變。被推荐人如未離職，動詞就
用現在式，如已離職，則用過去式。
(2) 推荐信屬正式信件，所以少用俚語或口語。
(3)通常只寫被推荐者的優點和積極性，而不寫缺點，以免影響其前途。
(4) 不可過份吹噓，以免減低真實性和可信度。即使被推荐者的優點很多，也只要集中幾
個要點。
(5)對被推荐者的能力，不可因私人的偏見而影響公正性。
(6)用「To Whom It May Concern」(敬啟者)開頭的公開推荐信，通常效力較差，最好知
