JKD and Yoga
The day before yesterday was the shoot for The FLARE’s new music video. I
think I went a little nuts. It went well, but even two days later I hurt all
over (sad laugh) Parts of me are even swollen (really sad laugh). I’m
getting old and don’t recover as well as I used to (really, really sad
laugh). But I think the shooting was pretty good. I was happy to be able to
shoot for the first time with the tour band. It felt like we were all going
crazy together in a burst of light. It was as wonderful as being on stage!
The director was Aoyama, who shot the videos for “No More Machine Guns Play
The Guitar” and “Inner Child.” He’s amazingly creative director for being
so young. Keep an eye out for it!
But ugh, my neck! After the shooting, holding my head up hurt so much that I
thought I was going to die. I really wish my injury from last summer would
just go away already. I thought that I could maybe give it some “shock
therapy” so I went to do Jeet Kwan Do today. I was really into it. I love
martial arts. They’re great for the body. But I was in really bad shape. It’
s been about two years since I’ve started, and I’m trying to get my body
into top form. It’s much more my thing than boxing, which I used to do. You
train up until the last minute and then while doing it, you suddenly find a
kind of peace. That’s Jeet Kwan Do. I just wish I could do a perfect kick.
Bruce Lee is the genuine master, even now.
I also started doing yoga last year. There’s a class at the same place as I
take Jeet Kwan Do. Yoga is wonderful too. It feels like every cell is crying
out from happiness. Does that make sense? It’s like your heart and your
breathing are interconnected. In a lot of ways it’s like the breathing
exercises[2] I started doing in 2001. It’s all about the breath, and
centering yourself. That’s something that all martial arts have in common.
And something that singing, playing instruments, and acting on stage have,
too. It feels great when you think you’ve become aware of good things. When
you realize that although all things are different, they’re fundamentally
made of the same material.
I really want to get rid of this pain, though. Please, I’m begging!
This is changing the subject, but I’m really concerned about security worker
Akihito Saito, who was kidnapped by Ansar al-Sunna in Iraq. I’m playing that
his situation turns out better than Kouda’s did before, which was such a
tragedy. I think that the way the government dealt with Kouda’s case was
really horrible.
RUILI, British foot massage?! I’ve never heard of it before. I want to try!
Please tell me where a good place to go is!
CB, MadGeorge? Do you mean Screaming Mad George? I know him (well, I met him
years ago). He has a band? Please explain!

TRANSLATOR’S NOTES
[1] Jeet Kwan Do is a martial art based on Bruce Lee’s fighting style. For

[2] I think he may be referring specifically to the practice of chi kung or
qigong.
