Tim Burton
I’ve been really into Tim Burton lately. I loved “Batman” and “Sleepy
Hollow,” and I thought that “Big Fish” was really moving. “Charlie and
the Chocolate Factory” was great too. Ewan McGregor and Johnny Depp are
definitely two of my favorite actors. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a movie
that made me cry as much as “Big Fish” did, and “Charlie” was hilarious
but also a really good film.
Somehow Tim Burton’s world view and directing style really fits my taste…
kind of occult, fantastic in a strange and creepy way that children also
like. Watching his movies, it feels like you’re remembering something
important from childhood that you had forgotten – the sense that reality and
fantasy are all mixed up together. Isn’t that what it’s like to be a child?
I also like the more “stupid” aspects of his movies. “Mars Attacks” was
really dumb, and yet I couldn’t help but feel that there was some depth
behind it.
Not too long ago they had a “Tim Burton Night” at Roppongi Hills. It was
amazing to see his movies on the big screen again and be reminded how
beautiful they are. I wonder if he’s coming to Japan to promote “Corpse
Bride”?
I feel really good lately, seeing and being touched by so many wonderful
films!
