Candle Night
Today (yesterday already?) was the summer solstice. During this time every
year all kinds of places are set alight with the glow of candles. For a short
period, people are able to break free from the age of electricity and hear
once again the whisperings of a more ancient era. During this week I too have
been observing Candle Night by shutting off the lights at home and in the
studio. Working in the studio by candlelight feels amazing.
Just the other night I attended a really fascinating Candle Night event at
Meiji Gakuin University’s Yokohama campus. For some reason I’ve had a lot
of opportunities to go to Meiji Gakuin this month. On the 4th I went to
Yokohama for “Stop Rokkasho Night with Ryuichi Sakamoto” and the 9th was “
Escape From Nuclear Power: Cafe Stop Rokkasho” in Shirogane. Both were
overflowing with an unbelievable energy.
The Rokkasho Movement has started small but is definitely growing larger. I
think it’s wonderful to see young people like the Meiji Gakuin students who
are so intently focused on what they believe is universally true and
beautiful. If the energy of all the young people throughout the world is
directed towards a worthwhile purpose, we should definitely be able to pass
on a more beautiful world to the next generation. I really want my generation
and the materialistic, financially driven society it has created to be over
as soon as possible.
