PEACE BOAT


I've finally been able to realize a long-held dream of mine: riding on
the Peace Boat! For some time now I've been interested in taking one
of their boat trips, and I ended up participating in an event on the
ship that left Yokohama, stopped at Aomori and Hokkaido, and then
proceeds on to Russia and Korea.

I was only able to take part in the first four days of the trip, but
it was a hugely interesting experience because we visited
Rokkasho-mura. This past year and a half, I've been doing my best to
learn all sorts of things about the Rokkasho Nuclear Fuel Reprocessing
Plant. The more I consider the future of our planet's environment, the
more I can't help but feel that nuclear fuel reprocessing is nothing
but nonsense. If you think about it, nuclear fuel reprocessing
pollutes our ocean, atmosphere, earth, human bodies, and all living
things even more than nuclear power plants do. It purifies plutonium
that has no purpose other than to be used in nuclear weapons, and
costs the huge sum of trillions of yen.

I believe that this plant should not be operated.
Visiting Rokkasho-mura for the first time, I saw how beautiful its abundant
land and trees are. The area is also home to important Jomon culture
sites and is filled with a powerful energy. Yet at the same time, the
imposing nuclear fuel reprocessing plant stands in total opposition to
Mother Nature. The whole place had a strangely tense and threatening
air with absolutely no sign of life. It was ominous and eerie, as if
some really negative thing was at work.

Along with S.T.K., I took part in an event on the Peace Boat to
express our concerns about Rokkasho. With Rokkasho before us and the
sea beneath us, the stage was surrounded by magnificent scenery and
sublimating my prayers into sound there was a truly fascinating
experience.

My other topic of interest was Ainu culture. I've been interested in
Japan's aborigines for a long time now, so this trip was a great
chance. The Ainu people share common spiritual and aesthetic values
with the Native Americans and also have connections with the Ryukyu
people. I'm totally fascinated by their music, art, weapons and
clothing. On the boat and at Kushiro-machi, I met many wonderful
people of Ainu blood and beliefs. And the Peace Boat staff was amazing
as well! From now on, I want to deepen these chance connections and to
seek beauty as well.

A typhoon hit Japan right before we got on the boat, so we departed
onto a raging sea. The water was so choppy that almost all of the 700
people onboard were sick, and even the boat specialists and staff were
laid low. On top of that, the Niigata Chuetsu Offshore Earthquake
happened – we were truly helpless against the might of nature.

Then there was the incident at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power
Plant. Nuclear power plants are just too risky in an earthquake-prone
country like Japan. Apparently the plates in Chuetsu and Tokai and
really active, so why would they build such a hazardous facility in
such an unstable area? I absolutely have to use electricity for my
music so maybe I have no right to talk, but I'm just not in favor of
nuclear power. We need to use all this as an impetus to focus on safe
energy policy. Oil and coal contribute to global warming and are not
the answer. I hope that sustainable, natural energy sources like solar
and wind power become the norm very soon.

Many people are struggling in Kashiwazaki and other places. I want to
dedicate a prayer to their speedy recovery and relief.

念願のPEACE BOATに乗った。
以前からメチャ興味をそそられていた船の旅。
船上で行われたあるイベントのために乗船してきた。
横浜港を出て青森、北海道を経てロシア、韓国を巡る旅の
最初の４日間だけの参加だったけど
俺にとっては本当に意味深い旅だった。
というのも、ついに六ヶ所村に訪れる事ができたから。

この一年半、六ヶ所村の核燃料再処理施設に関して、
俺は自分なりにマジで学んできた。
今後のエネルギー問題、地球環境の未来を考えれば考えるほど
核再処理という行為はやはりナンセンスとしか思えない。
海、大気、大地、人体・・・考えうるほとんどすべての命を
原発に比べ物にならないほどのレベルの放射性物質により汚す行為。
現時点では核兵器の素材にしかならないプルトニウムの精製。
数十兆円という甚大な費用。

この施設は稼働するべきではない。

初めて訪れた六ヶ所村は、
豊かな大地と木々が本当に美しい土地だった。
とても重要な縄文文化の跡地であるこの村は
たしかに強力なエナジーに満ちていた。
同時に広大な敷地に存在する再処理工場。
大自然と相反して常に警戒態勢。常に戒厳令的なものものしさ。
変な緊張感と危険な雰囲気が充満していて、
それに不自然なほど人気がなく、妙な感じだった。不気味だった。
確実に何かネガティヴなことが推進させられている空気感。

船上でロッカショへの思いや意思を表現するイベントがあって
俺はS.T.K.として参加してきた。
六ヶ所を前に海の上で雄大な光景に包まれてのステージ。
自分の祈りを音に昇華させる行為。
本当に意味深い瞬間だった。

船旅のもう一つの目的は、アイヌ文化。
日本の先住民族であるアイヌに関して以前から本当に着目してたから
今回はメチャありがたかった。
ネイティヴ・アメリカンとアイヌ文化の共通の精神性、美学。
琉球民族とアイヌ民族の関係性。
音楽やアート、武器や衣装。
興味は尽きない。
今回、船上でも釧路の町でもアイヌの血を持ち意思を伝承する
本当にステキな人達と出会った。
同時にPEACE BOATのスタッフの皆も
本当にステキで素晴らしい人達だった。
今後より交流を深めたい、大切な邂逅。
これからも美しさを探求したい。

この船に乗る直前に台風が日本列島を直撃した。
俺達は本当に荒れ狂う海原に挑むことになった。
死ぬほど船は揺れ、700人ほどの乗客はほとんど船酔いで撃沈、
船旅のスペシャリストであるスタッフ達ですらぶっ倒れていた。
その最中、中越地震がおきた。
やっぱり大自然の威力の前で、俺達は無力だ。

そして柏崎刈羽原発の事故。
地震大国の日本には、原発はやはりリスキーすぎる。
中越や東海はその中でも特にプレートの動きが活発な地域らしい。
何故そんな不安定な土地に地球上でもっとも危険な施設を
設けてしまうんだろう？
音楽に電気を最も必要とする俺らが言うのもなんだけど
やはり原発には賛成できない。
これを期に多くの人々は原発について、
本当に安全なエネルギー政策について、本気で着目するべきだ。
温暖化を止めるためには石油、石炭を必要とする方法にも
とにかく賛成できない。
一刻も早く太陽エネルギー、風力エネルギーなどの
永久的に使える自然エネルギーの一般化を本当に望む。

柏崎を始め、本当に多くの人々がまだまだ苦しんでいる。
一刻も早い復旧と被害にあった人達の安堵を祈りたい。
