R.I.P.


Jaco Pastorius, one of the most amazing bassists in the history of music,
departed this world exactly 20 years ago.

As a teenager, I was taken in by his astounding innovativeness and charisma,
which totally changed the music and jazz scenes. I was so sad to hear of his
premature death, which was brought on by his entirely instinctive way of
leaving. I don't think that a bassist who exceeds Jaco in presence and
originality has appeared in the past 20 years, and I'm sure he'll remain
great even 50 or 100 years in the future.

Joe Zawinul died also died the other day. Joe was the founder of the band
Weather Report, a hugely important part of the scene and which made the world
aware of Jaco's existence. Miles' "Bitches Brew," the impact of
electronization on jazz at that time, and the Weather Report (with Jaco)
scene and popularity can't be discussed without mentioning Joe. He was truly
a great keyboardist.

Legendary drummer Max Roach, who along with Miles and Clifford Brown made an
important contribution to the formation of jazz in the 40's and 50's, also
passed away a few months ago.

I pray that they all rest in peace.

In the world of music, generational change is taking place at rapid speed.
From the bottom of my heart, I want to express my thanks to all the great
musicians who have dedicated their life to the evolution and creation of
music.

音楽史上、最も偉大なベーシストのひとり
ジャコ・パストリアスがこの世を去ってからちょうど２０年になる。

音楽のシーン、JAZZのシーンを、
彼の登場前と後では、まったく異なるものにしてしまった
その驚異的な革新性とカリスマ性に
ティーンエイジだった俺は完全にヤられてしまった。
あまりにも本能的なその生き様が
早すぎる死を招き入れる結果となってしまったジャコ。
当時の俺にとってその悲報は辛すぎた。
この２０年、彼を越える存在感と革新性を誇るベーシストは
正直まだ出現していないのではないか。
５０年後、１００年後も彼は偉大なままだろう。

そして先日、ジャコの存在を世に知らしめるキッカケとなった
シーンにおける最重要バンド、ウェザー・リポートの創始者
ジョー・ザヴィヌルが亡くなった。
マイルスの「ビッチェズ・ブリュー」も、
JAZZのエレクトリック化による当時の衝撃も、
ジャコを擁するウェザー・リポートのシーンの席巻も
ジョー無しには語れない。
真の偉大なキーボーディストだった。

同じく数ヶ月前、マイルスやクリフォード・ブラウン達と
４０年代、５０年代のJAZZの形成に重要な貢献をした
伝説のドラマー、マックス・ローチもこの世を去った。

全ての命の冥福を祈りたい。

音楽の世界の世代交代はこのところ猛スピードでおこっている。
音楽の進化、形成に人生を捧げ生き抜いた
全ての偉大なミュージシャンに心から感謝の意を表したい。
