Shooting for the stars: Q&A with Caron Butler By Pete Jackel


Another long season ended Thursday after the San Antonio Spurs and Detroit
Pistons squared off in the seventh and deciding game of the NBA Finals.

又一個漫長的球季即將在於星期四結束,聖安東尼奧馬刺和底特律活塞已經準備好面對
第七場比賽,一場將決定誰是NBA的冠軍的比賽.


For Caron Butler, the season is just starting. With designs on becoming an
All-Star sooner rather than later, Butler is pushing himself through a
grueling summer of conditioning to prepare himself for the 2005-06 season....

對Caron Butler而言,這個球季才將開始,為了2005-2006球季做準備Butler使自
己投入一個嚴格訓練的夏天,並期待在不久的將來變成一個All-Star球員.



JT: Who do you see the Milwaukee Bucks drafting with the first overall pick
    next Tuesday - Andrew Bogut or Marvin Williams?

問:你認為公鹿隊會在下星期四選誰當他們的狀元,Andrew Bogut or Marvin Williams?


Butler"I personally would take Marvin Williams just because of his upside.
I've seen Bogut and his potential is good and everything, but with Marvin
Williams, you see how good he is now and he's only going to get that much
better. His athleticism is unbelievable and with his tenacity and intensity
on the court, he has a great future in the game. It'll be interesting to see
what happens. They may very well take Andrew Bogut, but if it were my pick,
I would take Marvin Williams."

小巴:我個人會選擇Marvin,只是因為他的一些優點,我看過Bogut且他的任何方面淺能
都很好,但是Marvin你會看到他現在有多好,且他將來只會越來越棒.他的運動能力和

JT: What are your feelings about Phil Jackson returning to coach the Lakers?

Butler "I played under a lot of great coaches in my career - Max Good at
Maine Central Institute, Jim Calhoun at Connecticut, Pat Riley when I
first came to Miami, Stan Van Gundy and now the guru of all basketball
coaches, Phil Jackson. That's unbelievable. I'm real excited.''

小巴:在我的生涯中曾經為許多偉大的教練打過球.Max Good at Maine Central
Institute,Jim Calhoun at Connecticut,在我到Miami後遇到Pat Riley,
Stan Van Gundy,且現在遇到了Phil.這是難以置信的,我真的感到很興奮.

JT: How much interaction have you had with Jackson since he returned as
    Lakers coach?

Butler: "I was at the press conference and I also was at the gym when he came
in the next day. We were working out some draftees and he was telling me how
he wanted to use me. He wanted me to continue to work on my ballhandling.
I'm going to handle the ball a lot, just like I did my first year in Miami
(02-03).

"It's kind of like Scottie Pippen played in the triangle offense, bringing
the ball up and doing a lot of things with it, so I'm going to be able to
use my versatility."

小巴:我在記者會上以及他隔天來到體運館中,在一些例行練習後(這邊不是很懂).他

JT: Jackson said prior to taking the job that he considered the Lakers' roster
to be unappealing. Could you envision yourself being included in a trade as
Jackson tries to upgrade the talent level?

試升級這支球隊而自己將被包含在交易之中嗎?

Butler: "There's always the possibility of trades. You've got to look at the
game. It's a business before anything. No one is safe. I think that the only
player who is safe in the whole NBA is probably LeBron James because of his
marketability and everything. But anybody in the NBA can be traded at anytime, as you saw last summer with the Shaquille O'Neal trade. No one is untouchable other than No. 23 with Cleveland (James).

"All I'm worried about right now is making sure I'm ready and, mentally and
physically, I'm prepared for anything.''

小巴:一切總是會有交易的可能性,你必須去面對比賽,在任何事情之前都是生意為主,
沒有人是安全的,我想整個NBA唯一一個可能安全的人可能是雷霸龍,因為他的商業利益和

JT: Obviously, the trade of Shaquille O'Neal greatly impacted the Lakers last
year. But how did this team not even make the playoffs?

問:顯然的,去年歐胖胖的交易隊湖人是個很大的衝擊,但是這支球隊怎麼連季後賽都沒
   有打進去?

Butler: "I thought we would make the playoffs, but we had a couple pretty
tough breaks. Me, Lamar (Odom) and Kobe (Bryant) only played together on
the court for probably 40 games this year due to injuries. I feel that with
the three of us together, who knows what would have happened? Who knows what
would have happened if Rudy (Tomjanovich) was still the coach? You know,
there's a lot of ifs and what could have happened and what would have happened,
but I think we could be a real good team again.''

小巴:我想我們能進入季後賽,但是遇到了許多相當不好的意外,我和辣媽和阿鼻因為受傷,
在這一年終大概僅僅一起打了四十場左右的球,我認為當我們三個在一起,誰知道會發生什
麼事情?而如果老湯繼續執教,誰又會知道發生什麼事情?你知道的,有很多的如果和未知的
情況會發生,但是我想我們能再一次成為一支很好的球隊.



JT: You had an up-and-down first year with the Lakers. It seemed like you would
have a 30-point, 10-rebound game one night and then follow that up by maybe
going 3-for-9 from the floor. What were you fighting through?

問:你在湖人的第一年的情況載浮載沉.有時候你會忽然一場30分10籃板,而接下來你可能
下一場會是投九中三,你在戰鬥的過程是什麼樣的情況?

Butler: "It was just trying to get a rhythm. We were trying to incorporate the
triangle and some nights, it worked well. But then some nights, the things we
did that worked well, we wouldn't do again. I'd have 30-point games and then
other nights, I would have 12 or 10.

我只是嘗試去找到節奏,我們試著在某些夜晚去加入三角戰術,且進行的非常好.但是可能
接下來某些夜晚,有些我們本來做的不錯的事情卻又不能再次做到.我會有一場30分的比賽

"It was all about getting comfortable with the triangle. But once we got
comfortable with it at the end of the season, the last 15 or 16 games,
I averaged like 24 points and nine rebounds. So I was getting real familiar
with things and picking and choosing my spots. That's to show you what's
going to come next year.''

那完全是關於是否能打出自在的三角戰術,而有一次我們在季末的最後15-16場球做的很好
而我再那時得到約24分九籃板的成績,所以我感到越來越熟悉在拿球和位置的選擇上.

JT: Kobe Bryant is seen by a lot of people as a prime example of a selfish,
egocentric player, the likes of which have tarnished the NBA's image.
What is your perspective on him?

看他的?


Butler: "Kobe is a good dude on and off the court. He's a great teammate.
We go out to eat, he invites me to his kid's party and I invite him to mine.
He's a real funny."

他邀請我參加他小孩的派對,而我也邀請他參加我的,他真的很有趣.



JT: Just for the heck of it, who do you consider to be the five greatest
    players you've matched up against in your NBA career?

Butler: "I would say Kobe Bryant, Ron Artest, Dwyane Wade, Trady McGrady
and Allen Iverson. And Shaquille O'Neal is the most dominant player in the
league.'' ....

小巴:我會說是阿鼻,阿泰,典偉,T-mac,和AI.而歐胖胖是最能主宰聯盟的球員.



JT: How close do you think you are to being an All-Star?

問:你認為你離成為一個全明星球員有多遠?

Butler: "During my rookie season, after I played against the Wizards, Michael
         Jordan said the sky was the limit for me and that I was going to be
         a star in this league.

小巴:在我的菜鳥球季中,當我對到巫師的時候,左敦說天空才是我的極限,而我將會在聯
     盟中成為一個"猩猩"(這段有點不確定)


Butler"Last year was just to show everyone that my health was back and it's
only going to get better for me. I've got my eyes on being an All-Star and
winning a championship and I'm just ready."I think I'm a summer away from
being an All-Star - this summer right here.''

小巴說:去年只是讓大家看到我找回健康的身體,且那對我來說只是要做的更好.現在
我要著眼在成為一個全明星球員且贏得冠軍,而我已經準備好了.

我認為我距離成為全明星就在夏天過後,而且那就在這個夏天.(真難了解= =")

這邊是說，Phil 正式上任後到體育館參與新秀測試的過程，而湖人本身有派球員來協助球
團測試今年報名投入選秀的球員，Caron 是其中一員。

小道消息：據說 Gerald Green 來表演/接受測試時湖人有找 Kobe 來。

這兩段大概是說 Jordan 在 Caron 的新秀年時就很讚賞他的潛力，認為他會很有發展。
那 Caron 對自己現在的期待是在下個球季就成為聯盟中的明星球員。

如果不健忘的話，Lamar 之前接受訪問說過他希望在下個球季成為聯盟頂尖的十位球員之
一，但願他們兩個可以身穿紫金球衣朝各自的目標一起努力。
