Some days Luke Walton's ankle feels OK, and other days he is crucially aware
that it is not.
"Sometimes I'll make a move and it will be bone on bone," Walton said.

Walton hasn't been the same since he sprained his right ankle before Christmas.
He figures it will be an ongoing issue throughout the season, and it will
surely be tested when the Lakers play back-to-back games tonight at Memphis and
Wednesday at New Orleans.

Walton might have turned a corner Sunday, which would go a long way to
maintaining stability and versatility in the offense. The third-longest tenured
Laker after Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher, Walton is a valued role player who
knows the triangle offense.

He had 10 points and a season-high seven assists against Indiana in more than

"We have him out there because he's knowledgeable about what we do and keeps
everybody fluid in the offense," Coach Phil Jackson said. "I've been very

Jackson had been starting Trevor Ariza at forward but inserted Walton back into
the fold on Sunday. Jackson said he likely will rotate Ariza and Walton at
forward depending on the matchups.

Walton is more of a passer while Ariza is a lengthy defender with a midrange

As far as his ankle, Walton would be happy just making it through Wednesday.
"It's fine enough to play, but it's definitely not where I want it to be"
he said.

The last time the Lakers came to Memphis, Bryant went off for 60 points and
became the fourth player in NBA history to score at least 50 in three
consecutive games.
It was a revealing mark, given how the season played out for the Lakers, who
often watched and waited for Bryant to take over games.

But there is a different dynamic with Jackson's new up-tempo offense, as evidenced
by a recent poor shooting stretch by Bryant.
Bryant shot 41.8 percent in December, and his 44.2 percent average this season
is off considerably from last season's 46.3. He is in the midst of a rough
spell with 34.5 percent (19 for 55) shooting the past three games.

been impacted much. Bryant does more ballhandling and distributing. He leads
the team in both steals (63) and turnovers (106).

Jackson hopes it speaks to how much the team has changed and cited the
development of center Andrew Bynum as a big factor.
"Kobe's shooting in the month of December has not been accurate," Jackson said.
"Our record has been good in spite of it. We're fortunate because of that. A
lot of it has to do with the ability for us to get Andrew the ball in positions
where he can score."
