During an interview with a Sacramento television station last weekend, Chris
Webber reminded the world that he still intends to return to the NBA this
year. In fact, he claims several teams have contacted him and he expects to
return to the court within a couple of weeks.

Is that realistic? It's too early to say. The biggest concern will be his
conditioning – he seemed to run out of gas toward the end of his run with
the Detroit Pistons last year. Will sitting out the first two and a half
months mean he has that much more rust to shake off, or did it simply offer
him a chance to get rested and rejuvenated?
這可能成真嗎？目前下定論還太早。最大的原因還是來自於Webber目前的狀況，他去年在

Any team that's thinking about signing him is obviously banking on the
latter. So who's pursuing him? Sadly, these types of things operate like a
silent auction – we'll only have complete confirmation of the winning bid.
But that doesn't mean we can't make an educated guess as to who the other
contenders might be. Here are the five teams most likely pursuing him right
now:

5. Dallas Mavericks

The Mavericks were in heavy pursuit of Webber before the season but were
unable to agree on contract terms. At the time, the word was that Webber
wanted either a two-year deal or a large part of the midlevel exception. He's
obviously not going to get either one from any team, but the Mavs have to
remain on his short list simply because of their past interest. Trouble is,
the Mavs don't really need him as much as they thought they would, not with
Erick Dampier, DeSagana Diop and even Brandon Bass contributing to their
big-man rotation. If he signed there, he'd be sacrificing a chance at regular
playing time for a chance to ride this team's coattails to a title.

4. Orlando Magic

The Magic were linked to Webber in the summer but ultimately decided against
meeting his contract demands. Now, they may want to reconsider; after a hot
start, Orlando has dropped five of their last six and 12 of their last 19.
Dwight Howard is basically on an island in the middle, hauling down 15.2
rebounds per game while the rest of the team patrols the perimeter. Adding
Webber wouldn't help their defense at all (they currently rank 21st in the
league giving up 101.1 points per game) but it would help diversify their
offense by adding a mid-range threat.
魔術曾經在夏天跟Webber有過接觸，不過最後還是決定不跟Webber簽約。而現在，他們可

The Pistons are Webber's preferred destination; he enjoyed playing for his
hometown team last year and probably would have re-signed this summer had
Detroit wanted him back. Unfortunately for him, the Pistons chose to go in a
different, younger direction. By trading Nazr Mohammed, though, the team did
clear enough room under the luxury tax to make another reunion possible,
although they would have to clear another roster spot to make it happen. He
was a starter last year, but if he returns, he'd be the fourth big man behind
Rasheed Wallace, Antonio McDyess and Jason Maxiell.

2. Los Angeles Lakers

Webber may have lost most of his athleticism, but he's still one of the best
passing big men to ever play the game and there will always be a role for
such a player in Phil Jackson's triangle offense. Plus, the Lakers have an
immediate opening following Andrew Bynum's injury, which should leave the
team shorthanded in the middle for at least the next eight weeks. One of
Webber's primary goals is to finally win an NBA title, and the Lakers have
emerged as legitimate contenders – they currently hold the top seed in the
ultra-competitive Western Conference. There's a logjam of teams breathing
down their neck, though, which makes finding some kind of spark in Bynum's
absence all the more important.

Despite losing three of their last four, the Celtics remain the class of the
league. Many of their recent struggles have been on the offensive end, which
is precisely where Webber excels. Not only would he offer a better low-post
scoring option than Kendrick Perkins, but his deft passing could only help
Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce operate. At the very least he'd offer the
Celtics depth, which, despite a better-than-expected production from Boston's
bench, is still thin in the frontcourt.
儘管超賽輸掉了近四場比賽中的第三場，超賽仍是聯盟中最出色的球隊。目前導致他們顯

years old, this doesn't necessarily have to be his swan song. If he can find
the right niche on the right team, he might be able to extend his career by a
couple of seasons.
