Is there a player in the NBA that's more fun to watch than Ronny Turiaf? I
don't think so. When you watch Ronny play basketball, you know he's having the
time of his life. That being said, it hasn't been an easy journey for Ronny
Turiaf. After being drafted by the Lakers, he underwent a physical which
uncovered a heart-related problem; a more comprehensive exam would eventually
find an enlarged aortic root, known as aneurysm of sinus of Valsalva. No one
really thought he would play again, and was initially expected to miss the
entire 2005-06 NBA season. However, Ronny had a miraculous recovery and worked
toward joining the Lakers for the 2006-07 campaign. Turiaf has been a key
component during the 2007-2008 season thus far, earning a surprisingly spot in
the starting line-up at the forward position beside All-Star Kobe Bryant.
Turiaf is also known for his enthusiastic support when he is on the bench,
always cheering, jumping and dancing energetically during good Laker plays. In
my interview with Ronny Turiaf, we talked about his heart foundation, his
career, his surgery, and a whole lot more.
TONY: Talk to me a little bit about The Ronny Turiaf Heart to Heart
Foundation. How did you come up with the idea?
Ronny Turiaf: Basically the idea came after I had my heart surgery, because
I wanted to create some awareness around health and heart-related issues, but
I didn't really know the right direction to go into. And after Ethan Thomas
had his heart surgery, he reached out to me, and that's when I got all the
ideas and then that's when I got into a meeting with my publicist, Danika,
from DB Agency, and she directed me on what are the necessary steps to create
a foundation. And now I'm in the process of getting it all together, so pretty
soon you're gonna hear about me and Ethan Thomas and the American Heart
Association, because we wanna create awareness around these health issues,
because it's very important that people realize that heart issues are not a
joke and it can happen to anybody.
TONY: When did you find out that you had an enlarged aortic root, and what
were your initial thoughts?
Ronny Turiaf: I first found out, I think, July 10th 2005, and my first
thought was that it was no big deal. I thought it was some kind of a
misunderstanding, I was gonna be fine, and I was gonna play basketball within
the next couple of days. But it turned out to be different, and it turned out
that surgery was required. And we took care of the process, and three and a
half, four months later, I was back on the basketball court.
TONY: When you were dealing with the surgery and going through all of your
health problems, who were some of the people that really supported you and
helped you through the whole process?
Ronny Turiaf: I had my best friend, Tony Parker, and Boris Diaw, that I've
known since I was 14, 15 years old, and I had the support of my coaching staff
from Gonzaga University and the Lakers organization. Kurt Rambis sent me some
text messages and told me that if I needed any help or if I needed somebody to
stay in the house with, he would definitely allow me to stay with him. But on
the other hand, through the time of my surgery and the time I was diagnosed, I
didn't have a lot of time to think about it. So my surgeon told me that if he
did a good job, I was gonna be able to play basketball soon after. So I
trusted his judgment and I trusted his skills.
Gonzaga大學的教練及湖人團隊 Kurt Rambis(湖人退休球員 現為助理教練)寄給我一些口
TONY: What kind of research did you do on the surgery itself?
Ronny Turiaf: I did not do any research, because I feel, personally, with the
Internet, you can read so much on the Internet, so I'd rather talk to
specialists and I'd rather talk to the surgeons that have done about fifty to
fifty-five or maybe a hundred of those surgeries before, and he knows what
he's talking about and he's proven that he has skills in that department. So
my knowledge of my heart issue came from talking to surgeons around the world.
I talked to a surgeon from Toronto, and I talked to my surgeon from Stanford
University, Dr. Miller. And he explained to me the process and showed me some
pictures on his computer that were done before. So, it was definitely helpful
to talk to a professional in the field.
TONY: After you were done with the surgery, what did you have to do to remain
healthy? What kind of steps did you have to take?
Ronny Turiaf: Basically, my diet had to require less salt and no ketchup, and
that's pretty much it, because salt and ketchup have a tendency to raise your
blood pressure. So my surgeon and doctors asked me to go really light on salt
and ketchup, but that's pretty much it. After that, it was a matter of staying
in game shape and putting yourself in a position where you feel good about
yourself, and keep working out on a daily basis. And the whole process started
from pretty much walking about four to five times a day for about three to
five minutes, and it gradually went up higher and higher and you went from
walking to brisk walking to light running to running and into pretty much
playing full-court basketball.
TONY: What's your advice on how to handle life after the surgery?
Ronny Turiaf: Basically I would tell them to make sure that within the first
month and a half after surgery, they can definitely expect headaches and all
that stuff. Just make sure that they stay focused. And I would also encourage
them to go to www.myspace.com/turiaf21, and that's my official fan MySpace
page, and I would encourage them to send me questions and stuff like that,
because I will be more than happy to answer those questions, because that's
what I did after I had my heart surgery. I had a role model in Fred Hoiberg to
ask questions, and because I knew what was coming when the stuff happened to
me, I wasn't scared, I was ready for it, and I knew it was coming. So me and
my publicist Danika, we'd be happy to answer all those questions.
TONY: After you went through your surgery, what was it like returning to the
basketball court? What was that first game like?
Ronny Turiaf: It was very, very joyful, but on the other hand, also, it was
very tiring, because your heart is a muscle, so when the muscle hasn't been
working a lot within the last three or four months, it's very hard when you're
asking it to play basketball again. So it was definitely fun, because after
some time away from the basketball court, I was already tired like I had been
playing about twenty minutes. So it was very difficult, but it was fun,
because I was with my coaching stuff from Gonzaga University, I was surrounded
by people that loved me and cared for me deeply, and it helped me have a way
faster recovery.
TONY: What was your life like after the surgery? Did the surgery sort of put
things into perspective for you, and did it make you a more positive person?
Ronny Turiaf: I would say no, because I was already crazy before that. I
enjoyed life before my surgery, and I think now I can definitely say that
after about a month and a half or two months after my surgery, it was very
difficult because you have to realize that you can't pick up a cup of water by
yourself, you can't tie your shoes by yourself, and you can't do a lot of
things by yourself, so it definitely makes you appreciate a lot more
afterwards. But I think I was really appreciative because of what I had and
because of the education that my parents taught me as a young child.
TONY: When you have that kind of support system, does it make it easier to
deal with the reality of the situation?
Ronny Turiaf: Oh, most definitely. Like I said, they were there for me, and
they helped me get better. And I think love is really important in your life,
and I think that because my family, my mom and my sister and my dad, was with
me for about a month and a half after my surgery, everything was working so
well, and everyone was so happy to see my alive. And I think just to see the
joy of my parents that I made it through the surgery.
TONY: People love to talk about your positive attitude on the court. You're
always smiling, dancing, and having a good time. Where does that come from?
Were you born with it?
Ronny Turiaf: It's how we are. We're just so thankful for everything that we
have, and, also, my mom always told me to put others before yourself and to
enjoy what you do. And, also, my dad, he's kind of a showman, he likes to have
a good time and just enjoy himself, and I think when you put the two together,
my parents together, you get me. My mom was a big-time dancer, she was gonna
do ballet, but unfortunately for her, she got pregnant with me, so she did not
pursue her career. So I think all the dance moves come from my mom.
TONY: What has this season been like for you? In some ways, has it been like
a dream come true?
Ronny Turiaf: I think so. Because to the extent that we started so rocky with
all the trade rumors and all that stuff, I think it showed that we have a will
to win basketball games, and we also are just like any other family. Whenever
we have some issues, I think you just put all the links together and you
become stronger. We have good team chemistry because of that and because we
fought through adversity together. So I think it's definitely helping us out.
And with the addition of Derek Fisher at point guard, with him being such a
professional, and Pau Gasol on the interior, offense and defense, it puts us
at the top to be a contender for the title.
TONY: What has it been like playing in the Western Conference this year? I
mean, you have so many great teams and so many great players. Do you need to
be on your A-game every night?
Ronny Turiaf: Most definitely. Because of the fact that the conference is so
tough, it forces you to be more focused and it forces you to bring your A-game
on a nightly basis. And I think that because of the fact that you bring your
A-game, it helps you become a better player, a better teammate, and a better
ball club as a group. So I think we've been doing a good job, and we also have
to realize that the Western Conference is very tough and the eighth spot is
pretty much closing on the season with fifty wins. So I think it's really good
for basketball.
TONY: Finally, what it's like playing under the bright lights of Los Angeles?
Ronny Turiaf: You know what? It's definitely a pleasure. We're definitely
having a good time out here in L.A.; we have stars coming to watch our games.
I think the atmosphere is very, very nice, and I think you would have to be a
really crazy person not to want to wear the purple and gold jersey.
TONY: Thanks so much for your time, Ronny. It was great talking to you. I
appreciate it.
Ronny Turiaf: Thank you so much, man.
