war so jung und morgenschon;            it was so young and lovely as the dawn,
lief er schnell,                        that he ran quickly,
es nah' zu seh'n,                       to see it closely,
sah's mit vielen Freuden.               he saw it with great joy.

Roslein auf der Heiden.                 rosebud on the heath.

2. Knabe sprach: "Ich breche dich,      The young lad said: "I['ll] break you,

Roslein sprach: "Ich steche dich,       Rosebud said: "I['ll] stab you,
dass du ewig denkst an mich,            so that you['ll] always think of me,
und ich will's nicht leiden."           and I don't want to suffer for it."

3. Und der wilde Knabe brach 's         And the wild young lad broke it,
Roslein auf der Heiden.                 rosebud on the heath.
Roslein wehrte sich und stach;          Rosebud defend for itself and stabbed;
half ihm doch kein Weh und Ach,         however no pain and ouch helped him,
musst' es eben leiden.                  it must simply suffer.
