拉丁文的ablative包含了三種格的用法，
一種是ablative本身，類似英文裡介系詞'from'的作用，
表示“脫離”的意思，
第二種是instrumental，類似英文的'with, by'
大概相當於'by means of'的意思，
第三種是locative，類似英文裡的'in, at'
表示時或地。
這三種格的各種用法條列如下：
a. Ablative Proper: (from)
1. of separation, privation and want
2. of source
3. of cause
4. of agent
5. of comparisan (than)
b. Instrumental Ablative: (with, by)
1. of manner, means and instrument
2. of object of the deponents
3. of accompaniment
4. of degree fo difference

8. ablative absolute
c. locative ablative (in, at)
1. of place where
2. of time and circumstance
這三種格到了古典拉丁文的時代就把功能通通集中在ablative身上。
