Day 8 - Guillermo Canas Interview
Monday, May 30, 2005
Q. Tough match.
GUILLERMO CANAS: Well, yes, I'm a bit sad, you know, not to have been able to
play the match, but that sort of thing happens.
I wasn't expecting that at all. We arrived this morning; I saw him in fact
this morning. I could see that he was receiving treatment to his back, and I
thought it was just something routine. I was getting ready in the training
room, to have my fingers taped, then somebody called me and told me. I
couldn't believe it. I said, "Are you sure?"
They said, "Yes."
I said, "Are you sure?" I couldn't believe it.
They said, "Yes."
I asked three or four times, "Are you sure?" The ATP said yes.
Well, in a way it's great for me because I've been playing for two days. I'm
going to have a bit of time to recover. I wasn't really expecting that.
Q. You're going to play an Argentine in the quarterfinals. You're going to be
able to use the time you've got to rest?
GUILLERMO CANAS: Well, I think it's great to be in quarterfinals. It's great
for me. That was my aim, in fact. It's a pleasure, of course, to be able to
play a fellow countryman and friend.
I was lucky today to win. It happened to Chucho the other day, it happened to
me today.
(Cell phone ringing.)
I'm sorry. That's probably my mom calling to congratulate me. No, it's not
mom, so I won't answer.
I'm really pleased.
Q. You were playing with Puerta for your club three or four years ago. You
might be playing Mariano. You've known him for many years. How do you see
that match?
GUILLERMO CANAS: Well, it's a difficult match for him. He's playing Chucho,
who's been playing very well. He's been playing better tennis than what his
ranking suggests. I think it's going to be a tough match.
I know him well. He's playing at his best level. I think it's going to be a
tough match for me, but it's great that I'm going to have a bit more time to
recover. I think I'll be physically very fit on Wednesday.
Q. Have you spoken to Nicolas? Have you phoned him?
GUILLERMO CANAS: No, I saw him this morning. We just said hello. After that,
we didn't speak together, I didn't meet him. I was in the changing room of
Suzanne Lenglen and I didn't really have an opportunity to talk to him. I'll
probably run into him later on, so I'll probably talk to him. For the time
being I haven't been able to talk to him.
Q. You don't know what's wrong?
GUILLERMO CANAS: I think it's his back. He seemed to be feeling pain in his
back. But really, I don't know what it is right now.
