Day 3 Guillermo Coria
Wednesday, May 28, 2003
Q. This was a very changing match. You started well, then the second time
around it was a bit difficult. What was happening to you? What were you going
through?
GUILLERMO CORIA: I think I was nervous. I was under stress. I wasn't able to
do my best, to hit the ball the way I would have liked to have hit it.
I'm happy about the match because I think ultimately, although I wasn't
playing well, I was able to change my outlook and to start to struggle for
each point and to think of what I had to do. I think it changed the course of
the match. This is why I thought I was the underdog of this match. It did help
me out ultimately.
Q. At a certain point in time, you were pointing to something. Did you think
you were going to be out of the match at some point?
GUILLERMO CORIA: Yes, I was blocked out. In the second set, we had a score of
3-1, and I was losing the second set at the end, and then I realized that I
really had to do something if I was going to stay in the match.
Q. In the beginning of each match, you do a special kind of thing with the
ball and your racquet.
GUILLERMO CORIA: No, this is to concentrate a bit better. Simply it's
something I like to do. It's to relax a bit.
Q. What you do there is not easy, is it?
GUILLERMO CORIA: I've practiced this for a year, so now I know exactly what
I'm doing.
Q. What was it that made you nervous? Was it the crowd? Was it the way you
were playing?
GUILLERMO CORIA: No. I felt that if I was playing with somebody like this, I
had to win. I'd won against him the last few times. I didn't want to lose.
But I didn't start out well. For a long time, this had not happened to me at
all. I'd been playing well. So this has been an experience.
Q. The next time around, you know your opponent.
GUILLERMO CORIA: He's a difficult opponent. Every opponent can be difficult.
He played a very good match. I am going to be really ready for him. I will
have to have a positive outlook. If you win, well, good for you. If you don't,
you have to correct your mistakes.
Q. Playing well can be an experience, but playing badly can also be an
experience. Do you think any of the Argentinians can reach the final?
GUILLERMO CORIA: I have not been doing very well on the court for the past
few times. To be able to go the whole length, you have to have the right
outlook. This is what I was able to see today. This is what I was able to
change during the course of the match.
Winning is very good, but it allows you to relax a bit more the next time
around.
Q. What made you change the outlook of the first sets?
GUILLERMO CORIA: I thought that if I continued that way, I was going to really
lose, so I tried to change my game and my mindset. I tried to go after each
point. I knew that this had to be so in order to be able to win.
Q. The injury of your leg, did you feel it today?
GUILLERMO CORIA: Yes, I did, to some extent, but not very much. I think it
was psychological more than anything else, and I didn't have any type of
difficulty really. I've been hours in treatment. I've improved. I don't
really think this was a problem today.
