Gonzalez farewells Finn By Araz Gulekjian Monday, June 2, 2003 Hard-hitting Chilean Fernando Gonzalez continued his dazzling Roland-Garros campaign with a straight set demolition of Finland's Jarkko Nieminen early Monday. The 22-year-old Chilean posted his eighth win on the trot, easing into his first ever quarter final here with a 6-3 6-3 6-2 whitewash that lasted just 92 minutes. He next plays last year's 2002 runner-up, Spanish No3 seed Juan Carlos Ferrero in a re-match of the 1998 Roland-Garros boys singles final (Gonzalez defeated Ferrero for the title). Ferrero mercilessly dumped countryman Felix Mantilla 6-2 6-1 6-1 on Suzanne Lenglen Court earlier Monday. Gonzalez entirely dominated the contest with his spectacular 'smashball-style' tennis. He fired 38 winners (17 coming in the first set) and nailed five aces. The 21-year-old Finn played a lackluster game, and probably paid the price for his monstrous efforts in week one – he spent more than nine hours on court in his three previous matches, saving a match point to Frenchman Julien Varlet in the second round. This will be Gonzalez' second Grand Slam quarter final after making it to the last eight at the US Open last September. There, he became the seventh Chilean to reach the quarters of a Grand Slam, with Marcelo Rios being the only one to advance further (runner-up at the Australian Open in 1998). -------------------------------------------- 恭喜大恐龍啦!!下一場對蚊子可要加油啦!! -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 61.230.115.173
