Unseeded Brazilian Flavo Saretta shocked 32 seed Vince Spadea
6-3, 6-1, 5-7, 7-6(8) in first round battle, that turned into
a over three and a half hour war.
Saretta produced a multitude of winners off of both wings.
Carefully disguising his lethal two-handed back hand and
craking his whip-like forehand at will, Saretta had Spadea
well under control, wrapping up Spadea and the first two
sets 6-3, 6-1.
Leading 5-4 in the third set, Saretta served for the match
only to be denied by a resurgent Spadea, who broke to level
the set at 5-5. Spadea held and then broke Saretta to take
the third set, 7-5
Spadea accelerated to a 4-1 lead in the fourth set. Saretta
fought back and secured a key break in the ever-critical seventh
game of the set, narrowing Spadea's margin to just쨱 game, 4-3.
During the 9th game change over, (Spadea leading 5-4). Saretta
called for an ATP trainer to treat his lower back. After Saretta
received a massage, Spadea, then opted to receive similar
treatment for a tight lower right back.
The pair remained on serve until the 11th game, where again
a Saretta service break allowed him the opportunity to serve
for the match. Saretta faltered though, unable to capitalize
on the break, sending the duo into a fourth set tiebraker.
At 6-5 in the tiebraker, Saretta had the first of four match
points netting a routine backhand. He then had 2 more match
points which he squandered. On his fourth match point of the
tiebraker Saretta slapped a forehand cross court winner barely
out of the reach of an extended Spadea, securing a spot in the
second round.
