Martin Says Goodbye to Guga
Wednesday, June 25, 2003
Less than 48 hours after his marathon five set first round win
over the Spaniard Fernando Vicente, 32-year-old American Todd
Martin advanced to the third round with a straight sets win over
Gustavo 'Guga' Kuerten of Brazil. Martin won the match, which
was interrupted by rain, 7-6 (7-4) 6-4, 6-4.
Seeded 17, the 26-year-old Kuerten, three times winner of the
French Open, was playing at Wimbledon for the fifth time. Martin
is regarded as a part-time player these days, but has a fine
heritage on grass. This is his 11th appearance at Wimbledon,
where he has twice been a semi-finalist, in 1994 and 1996.
Kuerten was in the second round after his first opponent, John
Van Lottum of The Netherlands, withdrew in the second set of their
match due to a back injury.
Kuerten could never claim to be a power on grass but he had a
good first set, missing a break point in the fifth game before
Martin, after starting the tiebreak with a double fault, took
the decider by seven points to four.
Rain held up play briefly and Martin resumed control from the
re-start, running out the next two sets without being under
severe pressure. Martin broke for a 5-4 lead on a backhand net
cord volley and then served for a place in the third round,
winning on his first match point.
