One to watch: David Nalbandian
Saturday, June 28, 2003
2002 was a defining year for Argentinean David Nalbandian:
he shook the world of tennis by reaching the Men's Final at
Wimbledon as a relatively unknown, before being beaten by
Lleyton Hewitt. To do this at the first attempt was special,
but it was even more incredible,佧s it was the Argentine's
first professional tournament on grass. A year later he has
returned as the sixth seed, and so far has looked very
comfortable on the courts of the All England Club.
2003 seems to be mirroring last year's tournament with
Nalbandian slowly moving through the field, without
generating significant media attention or headlines.
This is perhaps surprising as his game is looking
formidable on the lawns of SW19. The baseliner has
overcome two tricky opponents in the shape of Andre
Sa and Vladimir Voltchcov without dropping a set
(unlike either Henman or Agassi) and, in contrast to
Roddick, not participated in one tie break.
In a consistent but not earth shattering season,
Nalbandian has reached the quarter-finals in Australia
and broken into the top ten for the first time in his
career. The leader of the Argentinean invasion acknowledges
that the experience gained over the year will add to his
chances of repeating his 2002 success.
Slovakian, Karol Kucera will provide Number 1 court
opposition for the 6th seed today. Like Nalbandian, he
too has progressed quietly through to the third Round
without dropping a set and in his opening match knocked
out the seeded South African Wayne Ferreira.
