Gonzalez Trumps Kuerten in Vina del Mar Final
Fernando Gonzalez improved to 10-0 in Vina del Mar when he defeated Gustavo
Kuerten 7-5, 6-4 in the final. The Chilean won the title in 2002 and did not
play the event last year.
Gonzalez claimed his first title since 2002, when he won Vina del Mar and Paler
mo. His four career titles ?including his breakthrough win in Orlando in 2000 ?
have all been on clay.
Fifth seed Gonzalez did not drop a set en route to the title and took out top
seed Nicolas Massu in the quarterfinals and eighth seed Flavio Saretta in the
semifinals. Kuerten dropped just one set en route to the final ?during a tough
third-set tie-break win over Filippo Volandri in the quarterfinals.
In the doubles final Juan Ignacio Chela and Gaston Gaudio both claimed their
first doubles titles when they teamed to defeat Nicolas Lapentti and Martin
Rodriguez 7-6(2), 7-6(3). Chela said: "We want to thank everybody who came to
see the final. This is a great sport and we have fun playing with all these
people."
