King Coria Extends Streak
Second seed Guillermo Coria won his 27th consecutive clay court match - the
longest clay streak since Thomas Muster won 38 in 1995-'96 - on the opening
day of Masters Series Hamburg on Monday. But the Argentine had to work hard,
defeating 18-year-old Spaniard Nico Almagro 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. In another tough
first-round battle, Russian Marat Safin beat eighth seed Sebastien Grosjean
7-6(6), 7-5.
Tommy Haas breezed into the second round when Vince Spadea retired with a left
hamstring injury after the first set. Paradorn Srichaphan’s clay court
horrors continued when he fell 6-3, 6-4 to Belgian qualifier Olivier Rochus.
The Thai is 1-4 on the clay season and last year endured a 2-6 record.
Spaniard Fernando Verdasco improved to 8-1 on the clay swing with a gritty
7-6(3), 7-6(7) win over Argentine Guillermo Canas.
