Gaudio outlasts Verdasco, wins Generali in four sets July 31, 2005 CBS SportsLine.com wire reports KITZBUEHEL, Austria -- Third-seeded Gaston Gaudio beat Fernando Verdasco 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 to win the Generali Open on Sunday in a match that was delayed for two hours by rain. Verdasco saved eight match points before the Argentine finally closed out the victory. "I am so, so happy. I was already in the final last year, but failed to win. I wanted to make up for it this time and it worked," said Gaudio, who lost to Nicolas Massu in last year's championship match. Things didn't begin well for last year's French Open champion, as Verdasco easily took the opening set. "I completely missed the start of the match," Gaudio said. "Somehow I could not find my rhythm and when I did, the set was over." Gaudio responded by breaking the Spaniard in the first game of the second set and jumped to a 3-0 lead in the third set. Gaudio then led 4-2 when the match was delayed. "Breaks as long as this one are always tough. So it was better for us to go on than to keep waiting," Gaudio said. After the delay, Gaudio easily closed out the set. "I just could not cope with the rainy conditions," Verdasco said. "The balls were different, the hits were, too. It was tough." Verdasco erased a 4-1 deficit in the fourth set to get to 5-4, but Gaudio served out of the match as the rain again started to fall.
