Moya, Nalbandian: Looking Tough on Day 3 The top two seeds at this year's Copa AT&T reach the final eight Carlos Moya and David Nalbandian, the two top seeds at this year's AT&T Copa, quickly defeated their second-round opponents Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals in Buenos Aires. Top seed Moya, the 1995 Buenos Aires champion, fought past wild card Edgardo Massa of Argentina 6-2, 6-2, while Argentine David Nalbandian, the second seed, had an equally easy time overcoming compatriot Franco Squillari 6-1, 6-3. Moya now meets Luis Horna of Peru, who upset No. 7 seed Nicolas Lapentti in other second-round action After a standout 2002 season, in which he claimed four titles, Moya says he's motivated to go the distance on the red clay, at an event where he won his first of 11 ATP titles. Nalbandian, meanwhile, is coming off a superb run at the Australian Open, where he reached the quarterfinals (l. to Schuettler). Although some of Nalbandian's most impressive results have come on faster surfaces, including his run to the final last year at Wimbledon, the Argentine grew up playing on clay and hopes to claim his third career title in his home country. In the quarterfinals, Nalbandian meets fellow Argentine Guillermo Coria, the No. 8 seed who defeated yet another countryman Mariano Zabaleta 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID: Nalbandian: "It got complicated at the end of the match because Squillari started playing better. I think I'm improving after each match. Today, I made very good shots." About playing in Argentina "All the argentines like to play here at home, and I'm sure one of us will reach the final." THURSDAY PREVIEW No. 6 seed Gustavo Kuerten may hail from Brazil, but he's won the hearts of the Buenos Aires crowd, receiving a standing ovation when he arrived on court for his first round match on Tuesday night. Kuerten, who received a wild card to the event, claimed the champion's trophy in 2001 and says the adoration he receives here in Argentina has inspired him to become the only player to win this event twice. Having already won the title in Auckland, Kuerten could catapult up the ATP Champions Race with a strong showing at the AT&T Copa. On Thursday, he meets fellow Brazilian Flavio Saretta. Although Kuerten heads in as the strong favorite, his compatriot defeated him the only time they played in 2001 in Brazil. No. 5 seed Juan Ignacio Chela goes up against fellow Argentine Agustin Calleri in the late Center Court match on Thursday. After a standout 2002 season, in which he captured the title in Amersfoort, Chela is considered one of the prime contenders here in Buenos Aires. But he's lost to Calleri all three times they've played, including last year at the same event in the semifinals. No. 4 seed Gaston Gaudio, meanwhile, is coming off a semifinal run last week in Vina del Mar, where he lost to Marcelo Rios. On Thursday, he faces Brazilian veteran Fernando Meligeni. Gaudio and Meligeni have met twice before, with each player winning a match. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 61.230.101.21 ※ 編輯: maria08452 來自: 61.230.101.21 (02/21 02:24)
