David Nalbandian of Argentina is the eighth and final player to qualify for the
season-ending Tennis Masters Cup, Nov. 8-16, at the Westside Tennis Club in
Houston. Nalbandian clinched his place in the Tennis Masters Cup on Thursday
as a result of No. 11 Paradorn Srichaphan losing his third round match in
Paris.
The 21-year-old Argentine joins countryman Guillermo Coria in the Tennis
Masters Cup. Nalbandian is one of four players (Coria, Roddick, Schuettler)
making his debut in the year-end championship. This is the first time since
1982 that two Argentines (Jose-Luis Clerc and Guillermo Vilas) will be
competing in the year-end championship.
"I am very happy to qualify for the Masters Cup. It was definitively my
biggest goal of the season and I am very happy that I made it. I think I will
be ready for the event after the rest I took this and next week. I will try
to give itall and do my best in the event. I hope that this is not my only
year to play there," said Nalbandian.
The alternate position will be decided this week at the BNP Paribas Masters in
Paris. Mark Philippoussis currently holds the alternate spot but Gustavo
Kuerten, Jiri Novak, Tommy Robredo and Martin Verkerk all have a chance at
becoming the alternate depending on their finish in Paris.
Despite battling injuries throughout the season, Nalbandian is on course to
finish in the Top 10 for the first time in his career. Nalbandian did not
win an ATP title but reached two finals (TMS Montreal, Basel) and played well
in big tournaments, compiling a 13-4 record in Grand Slam play and 14-7 in
Tennis Masters Series events. He advanced to the quarterfinals at the
Australian Open (l. to Schuettler) and semifinals at the US Open (l. to
Roddick).
He withdrew from three European summer clay tournaments due to an abdominal
injury and he has been plagued by a left wrist (tendinitis) injury since the
US Open. He advanced to last week's final in Basel but had to withdraw from
the title match and he pulled out from this week's tournament in Paris.
The other top seven players in the ATP Champions Race have qualified for the
Tennis Masters Cup Houston, the year-end tournament where the best eight
players of 2003 collide. Andy Roddick, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Roger Federer and
Andre Agassi guaranteed a place in Houston, as the four Grand Slam winners of
2003. No.5 Guillermo Coria and No. 6 Rainer Schuettler are making their first
appearances in the year-end championship while No. 7 Carlos Moya was a
finalist at the year-end championship in 1998.
In doubles, the No. 7 team Leander Paes and David Rikl withdrew from the
tournament due to Paes' recent health concerns. Paes, who suffered a brain
lesion in late August, said, "It's been areal treat, having played the 2003
season with David (Rikl). It has been a wonderful accomplishment for us to
qualify for the Tennis Masters Cup, especially since we missed the winter
season and the better half of the North American summer swing. Even though my
MRI scan and medical tests are showing considerable improvement I regret to
say, I will be unable to play at the Tennis Masters Cup.Doctors have cleared
me to practice and continue my tennis activities as of today, but as I have
been away for three months and not in full match fitness, they don't want me
to risk further injury. I am confident that the next six weeks will be enough
for me to get back to peak performance to compete at the higher echelon of
our sport. I very much enjoy traveling with David and his wife, Martina. They
have been very supportive of me in my time of need, and I will always have
a special place for them in my heart. I would like to also thank the entire
tennis family for their wonderful support, and I look forward to being part
of the tour again in January."
The No. 9 team in the ATP Team Race, Gaston Etlis and Martin Rodriguez of
Argentina, will take the place of Paes-Rikl in the Tennis Masters Cup. The
alternate team will be Wayne Black and Kevin Ullyett of Zimbabwe.
The Tennis Masters Cup is the culminating event of the men's professional
tennis season and is co-owned by the ATP, ITF and Grand Slams. The top seven
players in the ATP Champions Race plus eligible Grand Slam champions qualify
for the eight-man round-robin event that will be played in 2003 and 2004 in
Houston, Texas. The world No. 1 has been crowned during the week of the
Tennis Masters Cupin each of the past three years.

所以事實如何一點都不重要了,重點變成了誰有權利解釋這些事實。」
