Team Profile: Mark Knowles & Daniel Nestor
After much success in the 1990s, Knowles/Nestor parted ways in 2000 when
Nestor teamed with countryman Sebastien Lareau to prepare for the Sydney
Olympics— decision that ultimately returned a gold medal for Canada. But
how many ATP titles were sacrificed in the process?
Reuniting in 2002, Knowles/Nestor won the three biggest titles in the first
three months of the season—the Australian Open, the Pacific Life Open and
the NASDAQ-100 Open, finishing the year with six titles from 13 finals.
They made three of the four Grand Slam finals. In 2003 they won five titles
—including Tennis Masters Hamburgnd reached the final of the Australian Open.
Nestor is one of the toughest players to break with his fierce left-handed
serve, which he hits with a variety of spin and pace턠and from great height.
Knowles is brilliant at net and solid from the ground, with his excellent
volleys compensating for a medium- paced serve. The teammates extract the
best from each other, and can hit all the shots.
Knowles says: It's really exciting. We didn't get to have a year-end
championships last year, so it's doubly exciting. It's together with the
singles this year, which gives us an excellent way to showcase the doubles.
I know that everyone, players and fans, are anticipating a great show.
Nestor says: One of our goals has always been to win the year-end Masters
Cup. Our goal going in is just to win the whole thing. Hopefully winning the
Doubles Race will come with that but I think our primary goal is just to win
the tournament.
