MATCH : GUSTAVO KUERTEN vs. SIMON LAROSE
SCORE / RESULTAT: 5-7, 6-7(2)
MONDAY 4 AUGUST 2003 / LUNDI 4 AOUT 2003
INTERVIEW WITH / ENTREVU AVEC GUSTAVO KUERTEN
Tour Official: Okay. Let's open it up for questions, please.
Reporter: Gustavo, where do you think the match turned the sea?
Gustavo Kuerten: First set was probably an important one. And I
think he was, you know, successful to play well when he needed.
And he was pretty much inspired, feeling the ball better than me.
I had only one day yesterday to get myself ready for the match,
so I still missing a little bit of the cleanness, you know, in my
shots to get the sharpness I would like to. But I try to hang it
in there. Still fight a tough second set and probably just happen
the same thing, you know, when I had to go for one more specific
shot close to the lines, I was missing for a little bit.
Reporter: Did you see his reaction after he won the first set and
was that bothering you a little bit, because he was like,
overexcited?
Gustavo Kuerten: No, no, I play my game. I think the opponent has
to play his game, too. And that's the match is like this. I don't
get too much affected by what the other guy is doing. Beside of
the way he's playing. But other things, everyone can come with
their own spirit to the courts.
Reporter: Were you tired from the travelling from L.A. to here?
Gustavo Kuerten: A little bit.
Reporter: When did you arrive?
Gustavo Kuerten: Saturday, after midnight, almost Sunday. So
wasn't the best preparation I could have, but it's okay. I'm not
worried, because I'm feeling good, again, you know. I'm moving
around the court pretty well, feeling the ball well, so now I
have another few days to get myself better prepared for Cincinnati.
Reporter: What did you think of his play, his all round game?
Gustavo Kuerten: He is a good player. He takes risks and today he
was with confidence, you know. Of course, by winning games and
winning the set he could play better and better. Once you play in
your country with this sport everyone can be a major opponent.
Reporter: Was Simon exactly what you expected or planned for? Was
he doing things that maybe you didn't expect him to do?
Gustavo Kuerten: No, I'm sure he could play the way he played.
And just maybe I could get myself, you know, with a little more
rhythm or a little more confidence into the tournament here, with
all this situation, the balls and the courts and everything,
could be a little bit different. But every game it's like this.
The momentum is there. You have to take the advantage of it. And
today he did better than me.
Reporter: Guga, you mentioned the short preparation coming from
Los Angeles. Did you request that the match be played tomorrow?
Gustavo Kuerten: For me it would be better. But they said I would
play Monday, when I got here. And then at least I asked to play
later on and they did this for me. So, you know, it was my choice
to play Los Angeles, too. I could come here four days earlier and
get myself better prepared for this tournament. So it's like this.
I knew it would be a tough match, the first one, to get myself into the
tournament. And could have made, but also, like I said, I played
three matches last week. So it is a good some good feelings, too.
Let's see what I can come for, for the next tournament.
Reporter: In the second set you seemed to be getting a lot more
momentum on his timing. A couple of close calls went either way.
Did you feel like a momentum switch because of that?
Gustavo Kuerten: Yeah, I had a good chance maybe on 2 1 when I was
serving, but then I missed three forehands. The thing I was
telling here, if I had, I think maybe two more days here or
winning more match, I would get the shots for sure one of these
three, I would have made it. I still hesitated a little bit. It
is normal I think by the situation. I came and I just let it go
too early. The momentum I get to myself maybe early in the second
set.
Reporter: Do you think it was the mental set because of you being
tired and finishing playing also late last week coming to Montreal
straight away that that had something to do with it?
Gustavo Kuerten: It is more to do with getting used to the ball,
the surface, you know, the courts by themselves, playing there.
That is probably the crucial things. One match like this, two or
three points can be decided, for sure when you know it's that key
point, you it's not going for your best, you know, you try to play
with a little percentage. When you play a tough opponent, it is
always going to be difficult.
Reporter: Were they Wilson balls in Los Angeles?
Gustavo Kuerten: I don't remember. But it was softer, but it was
the court, too, is very different. So it was much different
feeling, you know, playing than playing here. It was the balls
were very much lighter there and nice to feel and here the balls
are heavy and hard on to your racquet. It makes a lot of
difference.
Reporter: The U.S. Open is Wilson balls, and just two or three
weeks away, does it make sense to play with Penn balls here?
Gustavo Kuerten: Right now the tournament is no sense. You go and
you play one week and then there is another Masters series next
week. If you think about this, it is no sense, too, why we play
two Masters series in a row. It is a lot of things without sense
in the tour. And we have to sometimes play without sense, hitting
the ball with no the game is going like this a lot.
Tour Official: Any more questions for Guga?
Reporter: What are you expecting for Davis Cup this year, last
week you win Niemeyer, today you won Larose. What are you
expecting for Davis Cup?
Gustavo Kuerten: I think it will be difficult for us. You play at
home and every time you play, there is a home advantage. You kind
of favourite. So they're going to choose everything, the surface,
the ball and everything. So we have got to come up here and try to
surprise them. But I would say it would be very tough battle for us,
probably the toughest one we had so far to get ourselves back to the
world group.
Tour Official: Any more questions? Thank you.
