SATURDAY 9 AUGUST 2003
INTERVIEW WITH / ENTREVUE AVEC
DAVID NALBANDIAN
Tour Official:Okay.David is attempting to win his first Tennis Masters
Series title and follow his countryman Guillermo Ca禃s as back to back
Argentine winners here in Canada.Okay, questions?
Reporter:What turned the match around for you after that first set?
David Nalbandian:Well, I think, in the first set, I didn't start really
good. But in the beginning in the second set I started to play better,
started to do more rallies on the points. And I think I start to deliver
and I beat him.
Reporter:You have Andy Roddick tomorrow. What is your feeling about
playing him?You played him last year at this tournament.
David Nalbandian:Yeah, he is a great player. He has a big serve, so I have
to be focussed on my return. And then I think I have to try to take more
chances than I do.Because with that serve, maybe I'm going to be love-40
and then he makes three big serves and I have to try to be concentrate on
my return and try to make some breaks.
Reporter:How do you find the court here, David?
David Nalbandian:Pretty good.
Reporter:Does it suit your game?
David Nalbandian:Yeah, I think I feel really good in the court with the
crowd was very nice people. So I really enjoyed today and I hope I enjoy
tomorrow as well.
Reporter:David, can you pinpoint in that second set what it was that
started giving you confidence?
David Nalbandian:Well, I tried to play a little higher on his backhand. So
I think that was more important thing what I do in the second set.And I
think I tried to serve better and better in every game.So I think my serve
and my higher balls. So that one was the big point.
Reporter:Can you explain why you seem to be so successful, this is your
second time you've played in Canada and you were in the quarter finals
last year and now you're a finalist; is there something about this
tournament you like?
David Nalbandian:I like to play in Canada.
[LAUGHTER]
Reporter:This time last year, David, you had obviously come off reaching
the Wimbledon final. How would you compare your form now to then?
David Nalbandian:It is difficult to compare. It was two different
tournaments.I enjoyed Wimbledon and I enjoy right now here.So I think
it's different things.I enjoy both.
Reporter:What would it mean to yourself and to your career if you win a
masters tournament like this?
David Nalbandian:I tell you tomorrow.
[LAUGHTER]
Reporter:David, a Davis Cup question. You have the big semifinal coming
up in Spain; are you hoping to be one of the singles players?
David Nalbandian:I hope to win the series. That's more important to play
singles or doubles.
Reporter:Do you expect Coria to play?I heard there were some problems
between him and the federation.
David Nalbandian:Ask to him, not to me.
Reporter:You don't know.
Tour Official:Okay.Any other questions?
Reporter:David, there are a lot of Argentine players in the top 50 now;
is there any reason why the program is so good there?
David Nalbandian:We work hard.
Reporter:Can you expand on that, David?
David Nalbandian:No.
Tour Official:Okay, anything else?Thanks.
