PRIORITY TELECOM DUTCH OPEN
AMERSFOORT, July 18, 2003
In Saturday's semifinals the Dutchman meets seventh-seed Nicolas Massu,
who advanced to his first semifinal of the season by scoring a 6-2, 7-5
win over Dutch wild card Dennis van Scheppingen. The 23-year-old Chilean
is looking to reach his fourth career final and he has one ATP title under
his belt, Buenos Aires 2002.
Massu's opponent in Saturday's semifinals is Luis Horna fought back from a
6-7, 1-3 deficit to defeat Spanish qualifier Oscar Hernandez 6-7(5), 6-3,
6-3. The 22-year-old Peruvian now finds himself among the final four for
the first time in his career.
Horna: "That was a hard match. Every point, every game was fiercely
contested for. Hernandez was leading by 7-6 3-1, although the score
wasn't reflecting how close a match it was. At that point I still
felt it could have gone either way. He had a few points to make it
4-1 and had he taken them, the match then could easily had been his.
Instead I broke his serve and with that I won the next 10 consecutive
games. I could see he was getting tired and frustrated. I was leading
by 5-0 in the final set. He held for the first time to make it 5-1 and
then broke my serve. He was fighting his way back and I began to feel
the nerves kicking in. At 5-3 I had my second chance to serve the match
out. I felt more relaxed."
"The match was difficult. We are both playing good tennis."
Massu: "I played very well from the outset. I was solid and consistent
throughout the match. Van Scheppingen is a very inconsistent player
during a match. Sometimes he is playing unbelievable tennis and then
his level drops dramatically and he commits too many errors. I was
choosing my time to attack and capitalising on his low points."
"I have been playing well for a few matches now. I feel comfortable
now without any injuries or questions. I am really eager to win."
"I have already played important matches before. It is not a surprise
to reach the semifinals, but it feels good to be here. This is my first
ATP semifinal since winning Buenos Aires in 2002."
"My next opponent is Luis Horna. We share the same coach and physical
trainer, so they will be watching from the sidelines more as spectators.
We both know each other's game really well, aware of each other's
strengths and weaknesses. The one who plays the best tennis on the
day will come through. I view it like any other match."
"I am not putting pressure on myself. I know if I win this tournament,
I may lose in the first round of the next. If I don't win, I know there
will be other opportunities to win tournaments. For sure, I really want
to win the Dutch Open."
