Press Conference with GUILLERMO CORIA
Coria vs. Philippoussis 6:2 6:0 16.05.2003
Q: I guess you expected a tougher match?
A: Yes, it went faster than I expected, but when he was doing serve and
volley, I could return very well and then from the back of the court I could
dictate the points. So, he didn't know what to do. And that's why he probably
got mad.
Q: Compared to the beginning of the clay court season, even in Monte Carlo,
you seem to be playing even at a higher standard now. Do you agree? And in
what aspects are you the most happy?
A: Yes, it's true, my level gets better after each match. It's true, today I
played an incredible match. I just hope that each match I keep playing better
and by the time I get to Roland Garros, which is my goal, I will be 10 out of
10.
Q: Do you realise that if you keep playing that well, you're going to have to
learn to speak English?
A: I prefer to speak in Spanish because I feel more comfortable and I can
also say something more for you journalists. And also because I don't speak
very good English, I don't want to be misquoted, it happened in the past.
Q: Are you planning on learning or taking classes?
A: Yes, every day.
Q: I understand that you reached the semi finals in Monte Carlo two years
ago. So, what happened to you in between these two years?
A: I think everybody knows what happened. It belongs to the past and I just
want to enjoy the present moment.
Q: You are in another Masters Series semi finals. Are you surprised it is
happening to you so fast and so often now?
A: No. I practised really hard before the start of the season with my team
and it's paying off now. I mean, nothing happens by chance. It's all because
of the hard work you put in. The way tennis is played right now, you really
have almost to kill yourself every day in practise to be able to compete at
this level. So, it's all the hard work with my team that is now paying off.
Q: At this moment, of the six remaining players four are from Argentina. How
does this make you feel and what do you think of the form of your country
right now?
A: No, it doesn't really surprise me that we are so many here in the quarter
finals, because we are a very good group and we play at a very high level.
Hopefully it will be four Argentinian players in the semis and that will be
something historical. And we would give our country something to cheer about.
Because there have been a lot of bad news from Argentina and I think that us
sportsmen, we can give our people something to think about, which is positive
and forget about the negative things.
