Gaudio, Rios on Collision Course
But in-form Mantilla could upset the cart
Top seed Gaston Gaudio and third seed Marcelo Rios are just one victory away
from a blockbuster semifinal showdown after winning through to the
quarterfinals of the Bellsouth Open by Rosen Thursday. Gaudio improved to 6-2
on the year when he defeated Chilean wild card Hermes Gamonal 6-3, 6-4. Gaudio
next meets in-form Spaniard and seventh seed Felix Mantilla, who defeated
Brazilian qualifier Marcos Daniel 6-2, 6-3. Mantilla has dropped just 10 games
in his first two matches. He now has an 8-3 record on the season.
Playing his first tournament of the year, Rios squared his head-to-head series
with Albert Portas at 2-2 when he defeated the Spaniard 6-4, 7-6(3). Rios is
looking for his 19th career title and his first here after falling in the final
three consecutive years between 1995-97, when the tournament was played in
Santiago. Rios will meet Agustin Calleri in the quarterfinals. Calleri came
from a set down to defeat Mariano Puerta 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
FRIDAY PREVIEW
Gaudenzi v Sanchez
Andrea Gaudenzi is hoping to shrug off his sluggish start to the season (1-4
at ATP and Challenger level before this week) and erase the memory of a
disappointing 2002 season, when he finished outside the Top 100 for just the
second time in his career and lost in the first round 16 times. He did not
reach a quarterfinal all season. That followed and impressive year in 2001
when he won clay court titles in St. Poelten and Bastad.
David Sanchez was 1-3 on the season before this week, but took out fourth seed
Jose Acasuso in the second round, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1. The Spaniard finished 2002 at
a year-end best No.60 in the ATP Entry Rankings.
Rios v Calleri
Marcelo Rios is playing his first tournament of the year. Last week he
suffered a surprise loss to Giovanni Lapentti in Davis Cup but backed up to
beat Nicolas Lapentti in the reverse singles. Rios reached three consecutive
finals at this tournament between 1995-97 (when the tournament was held in
Santiago).
Calleri, the fifth seed, is searching for his first ATP title. Won a career-
best 25 matches last season (more than doubling his match wins in 2001) and
reached the final in Buenos Aires (l. to Massu in three sets).
Montanes v Vanek
Albert Montanes is 4-2 on the season. Last year he went 17-24 (15 of those
wins were on clay) and 12-8 in 2001. Was a semifinalist in Acapulco last year.
Has made one career ATP final (Bucharest, 2001).
Jiri Vanek is appearing in his first ATP quarterfinal in more than a year
(Chennai, 2002). Has won three tie-breaks in his two victories here this week.
Gaudio v Mantilla
Top seed Gaston Gaudio reached the final here in 2001 but fell to countryman
Guillermo Coria. He went a career-best 29-6 on clay last year, which included
back-to-back titles in Barcelona and Mallorca. Topped 40 match wins (43-18) on
the season for the first time and reached the fourth round of Roland Garros.
Is 6-2 on the season.
Former Top 10 player and Roland Garros semifinalist Felix Mantilla has finished
no higher than No. 45 the past three years. Between 1996-99 he finished in the
Top 20 three times and no lower than No.23. The Spaniard has started 2003 well,
reaching the semifinals of Auckland and the fourth round of the Australian Open
to build an 8-3 record. His nine career titles have all come on clay, most
recently in Palermo in 2001. Was a finalist in Buenos Aires in 1995.
