Giovanni Lapentti and Victor Hanescu First Up

The draw ceremony of the World Group Play-off tie 2003 between Ecuador
and Romania took place at the at Quito Tennis & Golf Club. Both teams
are looking for a position in the 2004 World Group of the Davis Cup by
BNP Paribas.
Giovanni Lapentti, the Ecuadorian number two currently ranked 130 in
the world, faces Romanian Victor Hanescu, currently ranked 76 in the
world, in the first rubber of the tie. Meanwhile Nicolas Lapentti,
ranked 52 in the world, will compete with Razvan Sabau, ranked 153
in the world in the second singles rubber.
Giovanni Lapentti said: "It does not matter who opens the tie. It is
more important to get two points at the end of this Friday. We have
to play against Victor and Razvan, anyway."
Victor Hanescu said: "Giovanni and I have very good serves and the
ball flies fast here because of the altitude, so I think the match
will not to be a long one. I will be ready for this Friday."
The importance of this tie has illustrated by the press presence here:
the draw was broadcast live by television and by radio stations.
Ecuador have fought their way through American Zone 1 this year,
defeating Chile and Venezuela, while Romania lost to France in the
first round of the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group.
In the head to head records, only Nicolas Lapentti has faced Razvan
Sabau before. That was in 1995 at a challenger in Chile. The Ecuadorian
won that time.
Razvan Sabau said: "I played against Nicolas a long time ago, he won.
I know Nicolas play very well, but I feel very confidence because I
reached semifinal in Bucharest last week."
Nicolas Lapentti said: "I know that I`m not at my best level, but
certainly I have been training very hard the last few weeks.
"I feel really motivated and I want to show an excellent level this
weekend."
Adrian Marcu, Romanian team's captain, nominated juniors Florin Mergea
and Horia Tecau as the doubles team. The pair won the Boys' Doubles at
Junior Wimbledon this year. Meanwhile Raul Viver, Ecuadorian team's
captain nominated the Lapentti brothers as his doubles team. They have
played together in Davis Cup by BNP Paribas since 2000.
The draw was attended by David Jude, of International Tennis Federation
(ITF), Florin Segarceau of Romanian Tennis Federation, Manuel Carrera
Del R帰 of Ecuadorian Tennis Federation and Paulo Pereira from Brazil,
the Referee.
